Freeman Park will be the first city park treated under the urban winter beetle tree removal program, followed by Quinson and Watrous Parks.
The tree removal is expected to begin shortly after Christmas with city staff and contractors using low impact, small-scale salvage techniques. The City's Urban Forester, Kim Menounos, says winter snow and frozen ground provide some measure of protection from undue equipment damage to the soil and plants.
The 2005 removal program resulted in approximately 220 truckloads of dead pine trees being cleared from city-owned land. Menounos says priority areas this winter have been based on assessments to determine where the greatest hazards exist -- safety and fire hazard were major considerations in planning the program.
City residents are reminded that each park will be closed during beetle control operations. ForestFest events for re-planting trees will be announced in the spring.
