candles, trees and wrap pose fire risks over the holidays

Prince George Fire and Rescue does see a rise in calls over the holiday season, but Chief Fire Prevention Officer Kelly Gilday says the spike can't be attributed to a single cause...

"We can't really say it's for one reason or another, it just seems to be that time of year when things happen."

Gilday is reminding city residents to keep their trees watered, make sure their strings of Christmas lights are in good condition, and he strongly advises against burning wrapping paper in the fireplace.

"Christmas wrapping paper burns quite quickly and quite hot and, actually, a lot of it can go up your fireplace, land on your roof or in the trees and start other fires," says Gilday, "So we'd rather see the paper go into the garbage or recycling bin, rather than the fireplace."

Gilday is also reminding residents to play it safe when it comes to candles, "when they leave a room, put the candles out, don't leave the open flame unattended."
