Prince George-   For the month of January members from the BC RCMP Traffic Service units will be out in force educating drivers on the new laws and the importance of paying attention to the road, pedestrians and other cars around them.
On January 1, 2010 the new changes to the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) come in to effect. The new laws are intended to make roads safer by preventing the use of hand- held cell phones, portable electronic devices and text messaging while driving. Only hands-free cell phones and devices that require one touch to activate will be permitted. Drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) will not be permitted to use hands-free phones. If drivers are caught texting or emailing they could face fines up to $167 and three penalty points.
To abide by the new law, drivers can use hands-free technology that is activated by a single touch to a button or, when it is safe to do so, pull over and stop their vehicle before they talk or email.

It's about time. I welcome this law.

How long until someone gets rearended because they pulled over in an unsafe spot?
its sad when New foundland has had this law for some time and we are just getting it ....
Nice to see this happening. If they get rear ended because they were pulling over into an unsafe area, that should result in an usafe driving or drive with out due care charge...I would hope.
I am usre there will be a lot of boo hoo babies complaining about this law..my thought, suck it up junior, you have known about this for a long time...
Parking on the Side of the Hwy should be only done for a Vehicle breakdown not to yak on your Phone, turn the Thing off when driving .
As mentioned in a previous blog - Get rid of stupid people and everything will be ok.
"ts sad when New foundland has had this law for some time and we are just getting "

Heck, Italy, which is not exactly known for conservative driving, outlawed the use of cell phones while driving in 1990!
this is against my human rights.
great_mystic_bush_ape:"this is against my human rights."

The ban doesn't apply to apes! Apes have their own rights!

:-)
The right to be oblivious while yakking and driving?

As has been mentioned, turn the thing off while driving. They'll leave a message if it's important.
greatmysticbushape, you can talk on your cell phone while driving if you like....but don't whine and snivel when the police execute their right to give you a ticket...
see everyone has rights....

Good Idea Batman and then some of the posts on this website may improve as well!!
the ape says we have too many rules and should forget half of them and ignore the rest.
I hope this is enforced....

I have a feeling it will be enforced as hard as the smoking with children in your vehicle law.

Another great law.....but how many people have actually received a ticket?
If this is enforced I hope the RCMP look at thier own force as I always see cops chating on the phone
we live in the wild woods of northern BC and should move to Maple Ridge if we think we need more rules and regulations.
