Prince George- For the month of January members from the BC RCMP Traffic Service units will be out in force educating drivers on the new laws and the importance of paying attention to the road, pedestrians and other cars around them.
On January 1, 2010 the new changes to the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) come in to effect. The new laws are intended to make roads safer by preventing the use of hand- held cell phones, portable electronic devices and text messaging while driving. Only hands-free cell phones and devices that require one touch to activate will be permitted. Drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) will not be permitted to use hands-free phones. If drivers are caught texting or emailing they could face fines up to $167 and three penalty points.
To abide by the new law, drivers can use hands-free technology that is activated by a single touch to a button or, when it is safe to do so, pull over and stop their vehicle before they talk or email.
