Prince George, B.C. –A new Ipsos-Reid survey indicates that while a majority of Canadians felt they had been affected by the recession, most are optimistic about the year ahead.

2009 was a tough year for many Canadians, with job losses mounting, investments falling in value and a new-found sense of frugality. The latest Ipsos Reid poll found that a majority (65%) of Canadians said that the economy affected them either ‘a lot’ (18%) or ‘somewhat’ (47%). Conversely, just one in three (35%) indicate the economy didn’t really affect them (26%), or not at all (9%).

Further, one in ten (14%) Canadians say that they personally lost their job in 2009, and an equal proportion (14%) says someone else in their household lost their job. It appears that, by the end of the year, some of those job losses might have been mitigated, with 14% indicating that they got a job in 2009.

Looking ahead to next year, three quarters (73%) ‘agree’ (12% strongly/61% somewhat) that they are ‘optimistic that 2010 will be a good year for creating jobs and getting people back to work’. Just one quarter (27%) ‘disagree’ (4% strongly/23% somewhat) with this sense of optimism.

Thinking about their own personal finances, two in three (67%) ‘agree’ (13% strongly/54% somewhat) that their ‘personal economic outlook for 2010 is bright’, while one in three (33%) ‘disagree’ (6% strongly/27% somewhat) that their personal outlook is bright.

I think a survey for BC and Alberta would be a better indicator.I work for a large retail chain and we have struggled this year.It may get better but this country is not out of the woods yet by any means
Another watered down version of what is really happening out there. This is not a recession, it is a depression. I agree partially with redneck...why not publish the numbers for Mackenzie, Terrace, Kitamat, Prince Rupert, Prince George, Quesnel and all the other ares in between that I did not mention. I bet you will find close to 100% in this geographic area were all hit very hard by this depression. It's funny how we as once being a recognized leader in the lumber industry now has to buy lumber from the U.S. This lumber is being produced partially from logs grown and harvested in the pacific northwest....pretty sad don't you think. This is Pat Bell and Jay hill leadership for you. There was talk and soliciting from Pat Bell about all the small forest license holders coming together to create a bigger and more acessable basket of timber to attract investors to the northwest. What has happened is logs are now being marketed and sold out to the highest bidders and there is very little benefit back to the communities at all...Pat Bell is a joke and so is Jay Hill, when are people going to wake up and see the snakes for what they are?
