Prince George, B.C. -  The United Steelworkers' B.C. Interior Bargaining Committee is reporting some progress, following contract talks with Canfor in Prince George last week.

A news release says the two sides had "some serious discussion on alternate shifting language and severance language regarding permanent plant closure and partial plant closure."

The committee says collective agreement language is needed on both permanent and partial closures to "prevent employers from simply running their workers out of seniority and then announcing a permanent closure of their operation to avoid the payment of severance."

USW Wood Council locals, representing more than 11,000 workers, are in the process of bargaining collective agreements with employer associations in the northern and southern Interior, as well as with Canfor’s northern operations and West Fraser Timber.  All collective agreements expired on June 30, 2009.

I work for West Fraser and am really upset that they are looking to take us Casuals from our current wage to 75% of the current wage. Pay us for years at a certain rate and then take part of it away? What about helping students get through school? what about the price of groceries going up? Gas? commodities? West fraser needs to take their head out of their @ss and see how hard we work. Workin on a weekend is an excellent way to go to school and make money for food, rent, and bills. But there isn't always much extra to go around. Things keep going up. I suppose I will have to study less if I have to work another part time job,eat less, drive less, and work the exact same. They make alot of money. I work hard. I go to work every weekend and work to the best of my ability. I hardly ever call in sick. All we want is to keep our current wage. They also want to pay us at straight time. Don't bloody ask for overtime then. After 8 hours, you're tiered! our time is worth something too! I hope all the workers out there VOTE NO to the FINAL OFFER!!! Demand more for us and yourselves! we dont want to end up like the grocery stores!!
