Cancer Centre Milestone

The new crane being hoisted into place in hospital staff parking lot
Prince George, B.C. - It is a milestone in the countdown to the $100-million dollar Northern Cancer Centre opening its doors...
A massive crane has gone up at the construction site in the staff parking lot behind the hospital.
Chief Project Manager, Hal Collier, says work is already underway on an adjacent parkade. Collier says his group, the Northern Cancer Control strategy, made a commitment to the hospital that staff parking levels would not drop during construction of the new facility.
So, he says, there's an aggressive timeline for the parkade...it's expected to be complete by late summer. Then, Collier says the forms will be laid for the actual cancer centre in early fall. (photo at left shows excavation well underway)
Collier says the crane is between the two sites -- it will be used to hoist materials and assist with construction on the parkade right now, and, will simply turn to begin work on the adjacent cancer centre.
He points out the cancer centre will also have underground parking for its staff and patients.
As for breaking down the dollar figures, Collier says the bulk of the $100-million committed by the provincial government will go towards the centre, but dollars are also being spent across the Northern Health region in preparation for the centre's opening.
