Green Projects At Local Mills Are Win-Win

Prince George, B.C. -  There will be significant benefits to both the local economy and the local airshed, as a result of two 'green' projects moving ahead at the Prince George-Intercon pulp mills.

The federal government announced $122-million dollars in credits for the mills' owner, Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership, last fall.

PG/Intercon General Manager, Martin Pudlas, says the company plans to submit two projects, worth appproximately $16-million dollars to Ottawa for approval at the end of this month.

The first is an $11-million dollar odour reduction project that would involve collecting DNC gases at the PG mill, the second is a $4.5-million dollar project to increase bio-fuel generation.

Pudlas says both projects are good news for the city, as a whole.  He says, typically, 60-percent of project dollars go directly into the local economy, through engineering and construction costs.

On the environmental front, he says, "We're going to see a 60-percent reduction in ambient odour."

"So, to put that in context today," Pudlas explains, "If we had 10 days where we had an odour event in the city, that's going to be reduced down to four days, annually."

Pudlas says C-P-L-P hopes to begin construction this summer, with a completion date sometime in the latter half of 2011.  He says the only 'wild card' is how long Ottawa takes to approve the projects.

I am glad my tax dollars are helping out with the corporate welfare system and improving the air in PG. Just wish the taxpayer was getting more credit for making it possible.
