Local Woman Stuck Holding Homesteader GC

Prince George, B.C. -  Prince George resident, Kathleen Miese, is frustrated that she's been left holding a Homesteader Meat gift certificate that is now worthless.

For the past several years, Miese says, her parents have given her and her siblings Homesteader gc's worth $300-each at Christmas time.

The local woman says her brother placed his order right after the holidays and received it in a timely fashion.  Her sister was supposed to receive her order on Monday, but did not hear anything until receiving a call yesterday morning to say that the business was shutting down and she could stop by to select stock out of the freezer.

Meise says she had yet to place her order and she's wondering where to turn.  She's hoping that there may be some way of registering a claim with the as-of-yet unidentified financial institution involved.

I would go down and select from whats left as they said you could do. A bird in the hand and all that...
sorry to hear of this , but she should mitigate her situation as well. Sitting back and just complaining is unfortunated....go get some inventory.....treat it like money,, which it is!!!
Sad about your loss, but what are we supposed to do, take up a collection and refund her this or what? Hell things happen, I lost out on a gift certificate when Tony Roma's closed...so Ms Miese, I guess you will have to be a big girl and suck it up...and get on with life...
there is a moral here...
sont use gift certificates, or at least cash them in immediatly...
Getting stuck with the Gift Certificte is hardly an issue. Get your butt down there and cut your losses.
I also lost out on a Tony Roma's gift certificate when it went down.
Now I gotta drive to Fort St.John for dinner!
She's not stuck with the GC. She could have gotten her money's worth. Where's the news?
Many years ago, just after I arrived in PG, I put a deposit on a leather coat for my wife. Before I paid, the store went bankrupt. The trustees then had a clearance sale and refused to honour the deposit. Since the clearance price and the deposit was only a little more than the original cost, I bout it anyway. I have always wondered if the owner of the store took my money knowing full well that he was about to go bankrupt. The timing was just not right.
Andyfreeze: There is a Tony Roma's in Dawson Creek. Bit closer than the Fort.
Wait a minute here.

She should be appreciative of the fact that she got a phone call and has been offered to go throught their remaining stock. It must also be noted that a long time Prince George business/employer is shutting the doors.
They did the right thing by contacting her and letting her know the situation and they offered product. So, I figure she should quit whining to the media and get over there and get her money's worth, before it is too late.
Must be a slow day, three items on the homesteader meats. either that or Opinion 250 is fond of old Ben.
It seems like several people here did not read the article carefully. According to the article, the lady complaining did NOT receive a phone call offering to let her select from remaining stock. That was her sister, who had already placed an order.
Andy, you had better get to Dawson or Ft. St. John soon, because I heard those two were closing as well.
Thank you billposer. I did not receive a call and in my opinion the fact is the business just didn't fold. Gift certificates were sold knowing full well that they would not be able to fill all those orders.
And the article missed the fact that I did say that it was very sad that the business was gone as I had been a regular for years.
Oh, and i had also hoped that someone would come forward with which bank is doing the financing, so i could register and hope to get at least part of the money back, if anything is left.
Tony Romas is closed ? . . .;-) Bring back Niners ! ! !
I hardly believe that Homesteaders sold G.C's knowing that the people who had bought them wouldn't use them by a certain day.

"Buyer beware".. We all hear it about buying G.C's or cash cards.
What were they supposed to do?

Post a sign out front: Sorry were not going to sell G.C.'s because we may go broke.

Come on people get real, if you read the original story the GC was sold before Xmas. I suspect they have been struggling for awhile but I would guess they were doing everything they could to keep the store open.

If you have had that $300.00 GC sitting on the counter for 2 months, that is shame on you, not shame on them.
Shame on her! As if a business goes from being profitable before Christmas to closing up shop 2 months later. They knew! They would have had to sell the GC knowing full well that they were in serious trouble and probably not going to be around to much longer. A bank doesn't come in and take control of a business within 2 months. That being said it is buyer beware w/GC, but after 27 years in business who would have thought they would close up over night.
I think the story reads HER sister was supposed to place an order on Monday, which is why her sister received a phone call advising her (sister) to have a look through the inventory on hand. Perhaps that is why she was upset. She had made no immediate plans to use the GC but felt as though she should have been contacted in the same manner her sister was.
IMO companies should have to insure GCs against such matters such as unexpected closing and bankruptcies so consumers are covered.
It's a gc, how would homesteader know who to call! I can't believe anybody would complain about a gc when other people are losing their livelihood. WTF
