The now-closed Homesteader Meats in the Parkhill Centre

Prince George, B.C. -  A mainstay in the local business community has closed its doors...

Customers arriving at Homesteader Meats in the Parkhill Centre on Thursday found the glass windows and door covered in brown wax meat wrapping paper and a small 'Closed' sign on the door.

Ben Klassen started the business with his wife 27-years ago.  Two years ago, he sold it to Al and Jodie Dubois of Fort St. James.  Yesterday, he had the unenviable task of helping to dismantle what had been a labour of love.

Klassen says that he is working on behalf of a bank to look after the inventory remaining in the shop.  He says, at this point, "The bank is in charge."  He's been asked not to disclose the name of the financial institution.

Klassen says a few phone calls have been made to customers who had pre-ordered shipments of meat.  He says he's helping to fulfill the orders that have arrived.  But he cannot comment on any outstanding gift certificates that people may be left holding.

Klassen appeared to be holding back tears several times during the brief interview, he would not comment on the current owners' staffing situation, but did say there were always 11 or 12 employed when he and his wife ran the business.

Klassen emphasized he is in no way involved in this recent turn of events and says it's quite something that it's gone.

He says he had "a great many loyal customers over the years and made many, many friends."

Efforts to contact the Dubois' were unsuccessful.

That's too bad. I liked their beef jerky mostly, but hadn't bought any in a while and was thinking about that just the other day. Too late I guess.
We dealt with Ben at Homesteaders for many years for our business and it was always the best!
They could have given lessons on customer service and quality.
It's a tough market out there, and my condolences to the present owners.
Bad news for the Parkhill Center.
I wonder how much the big box stores figured into this?
Off topic, but I am wondering if the jerky store up the Hart has changed hands?
They have moved across the street but the product is not as good as it once was.
Been back a couple of times but we have been disappointed.
Much tougher product, not enough smoke, and too much salt.
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that?
I've gone in there a couple of times. I usually go to Roger's on First.

The beef from these smaller shops are better than Save on and Costco. the worst is Super Store.

sorry to see an icon fall. But you know what they say, if you want a small business..... buy a big one.
Always enjoyed dealing with Ben.
Remembering Paula Engler, who worked with Ben for many years before she passed away.
Sorry to see another good local business fail.
metalman.
Andy I bought there twice... both times it wasn't good... way to tough, and dry, and salty like you said. Rogers on 1st is probably the best bet now?
Going to Homesteader was always a pleasure and Ben was the best. He personally delivered a roast to my door on one of those busy long weekends when it wasn't ready at the agreed time.

Now, I hope residents will give Rogers Meats a try. They have an excellent deli, their meat is head and shoulders above the big box stores and the same customer service that Ben was famous for. If we don't we'll end up with no shopping choices other than the warehouse style.
omg!! NOOOOOOOO
Glad, you woke up Anastasia
Thanks Eagleone!
Guess it wasn't just me!
Too bad, because it used to be excellent!
I will give Rodgers a shot.
just thank god save on didnt shut down or we would have a real problem in life
Ouch i always went there as they had top notch meat and great service.Well i guess i too will go to Rogers now.
Thanks He Spoke!! LOL

I know I went to Homesteaders every Saturday morning for our weeks worth of meat. I am saddened that our city is losing such an icon!!

Thanks for all the years of great service and product!! wishing you all the best in your future endeavors!!
I expect that with the four year closure of the Cameron St., Bridge that Homsteader picked up a lot of business. Now that the bridge is back up, some of this business would revert to 1st Avenue.

This would be a significant drop, and probably was part of the reason they shut down.
Service was great when Ben was the owner. Last dealings I had with new owners was a head scratcher.
Took a deer in for cutting, wrapping, freezing = $39.00.
One month later wanted to take another much smaller deer in for the same treatment and was told over the phone $79.00.

I just had an Elk done elsewhere for $90.00.

Rogers Custom Meats has always been good Just as it was when it was Englers.
Anastasia, after it was sold the icon part of it was gone as well.

Homesteaders had always done well and doubt the bridge had anything to do with it's failure.
This is Gordon Campbell's fault. Him and his damn Olympics!

Sorry, someone had to say it.
Gordon Campbell not withstanding, Rogers is a good place to deal with. I like the personalized service they give.
metalman.
ben was excellent at running the business. when i sold beef to him he was up at the slaughterhouse that day to check it out before buying. I didnt get anything like that from the new owners. In fact, they stopped buying local beef in order to get a bulk deal from the Peace. I feel sorry for Ben, it must be sad to see something you created die so soon after selling it.
This is very, very sad news.

Homesteader has been a mainstay of the Prince george economy for as many years as I can remember.

Ben Klassen was incredibly hard working, and it is sad that his legacy has failed.

When will Mayor Dan Rogers, and the rest of the City Counciul gang, learn that they cannot continue to keep rasing City taxes
I find the jerky selection great at the Jerky Factory on Austin Rd. Very friendly service, great quality and super selection of old fashined candy. Other goodies there as well.
