Prince George, B.C. -  City staff are in the process of certifying the results of a petition against a proposed levy for a Downtown Business Improvement Area.

The council-led DBIA levy aims to establish a special tax for commercial property owners in the downtown core that would be used for improvements to the area, similar to one established for businesses in the Gateway. (click here for full details)

Councillors gave the by-law first three readings at their January 4th meeting, kick-starting a 30-day-plus-one-week process for anyone to register their opposition to the levy. (click here for that story)

Deputy Corporate Officer, Wendy Nordin, says the deadline for opponents to sign the petition was last Monday, February 15th at 5pm.  She says the petition is being certified and the results should be released later this afternoon or tomorrow.

In order for the levy to fail, there needs to be registered opposition by 50% of the property owners, representing 50% of the assessed value of properties within the DBIA.

Stupid to oppose it if you believe in a better downtown property value in the long term.
All dependent upon how the Novaks vote.
Lets hope it fails to go through, another waste of money. Downtown businesses need help not more fees and taxes.
Novaks?
