Change in Flight Plans for Transat

Citing a lack of support on behalf of the Ft. McMurray region, Transat holidays has cancelled the leg of the direct flight from Ft. McMurray to Prince George on the Puerto Vallarta, Mexico run.

Transat Holidays says the company was only able to sell 24 seats out of Fort McMurray on the first flight, far short of what was needed to make the link feasible for the company. The Prince George leg added 74 people to the aircraft, a Boeing 737, which holds about 130 people.

Meantime, moving to make up for the FT. McMurray short fall, Transat will now add a Victoria leg to the flight. It is not known at this time whether the flight will originate in Victoria then pick up passengers here or the reverse.

The flight now passes through Mexican Customs at its destination so that should not be effected.

One travel agent comments it is very important the flight receives support in this region. “If we lose this flight from Prince Goegre to Mexico, how long would it be before another tour operator would look at this city ?“.

The Prince Goegre Airport Authority has worked hard at trying to establish this type of flight , by adding on a Customs clearing area , which must be staffed once a week by people who are flown in for that specific reason.

The flights into Puerto Vallarta will continue every Tuesday from now until March 21st, 2006.

It would be interesting to know how many people were on the 2nd and 3rd flights from Ft Mcmurray and Prince George, this would give us a better indication of how this thing is working.

Once again in appears that we have built the building, invited the Politicians for the opening, with music, donuts, and fanfare, some articles by Newpapers stating that Prince George Airport is **All grown up** only to find a month later that it may not be able to sustain one International Flight per week. It also seems incredible that we have to fly in customs people from Vancouver to cover this one day a week flight back from Mexico. Im betting that the next phase of the operation will be a local flight to Victoria to match up with a direct flight from there to Mexico. Or a total cancellation of the flight and revert back to how it was done in the past. Any takers?

Just because their are more people working in the Prince George area it does not logically follow that there are more people who can afford to go to Mexico in the Winter for holidays. One reason is that winter is when logging is at its highest level, and the other is that a large number of people in the town are working for wages in the $8.00 to $9.00 per hour range with restrictions to 20 hours per week. Highly unlikely these people will be going to Mexico. They can hardly buy gas, car insurance, pay rent, and buy groceries. The older people on good pensions, or on higher incomes have already **bin der dun dat**

Its possible that we will end up with a new c
Customs Arrival and Departure area at the airport that will be under utilized, if used at all.
Its a failure of the PG Airport Authority to coordinate flights from throughout the north into PG in a way that allows for a maximization of connections to make flights like this one work.

How many people from Fairbanks, Anchorage, Whithourse, YellowKnife, Fort St John, the North Coast, as well as Grande Prarrie and Fort McMurry could be added to our international flights if only we had a coordinated timely connections between all airlines that serve our community whether they be large or small, as well as by air, rail, and bus.

Short of any push in this regards I see the whole project as a failure.

Also I would have thought that a direct flight to California would have made more sense. I for one would not travel to Mexico because of crime and bad food. I would however like to link up with cheep flights out of California to other destinations in America or abroad, or more likely stay in California for a winter vacation.
