Prince George, B.C.-   There is speculation as many as 180 jobs could be lost in the Ministry of Forests and Range in B.C. as the Province tightens its spending plans.
The Ministry is to be subjected to a 6% cut in its spending which Minister in charge, Pat Bell says is a reasonable expectation given the reduction in actual harvesting activity.
The details of where the jobs will be cut have not yet been released.

It's always a shame to hear that someone may lose their job but, the MOFR is way overstaffed. Hopefully they can retire off enough of the longer tenured staff.
Attrition is good. But shouldn't they be taking Silviculture to another level. That is where they should concentrate their efforts.
He Spoke. The wheels on the Government bus sure aren't round. I hope that they do have a plan for the forests in BC.
I feel for those that will potentially lose jobs, although most will be retired out.

This is a much needed reduction though since any serious look at this government ministry would see that its mandate to handle the gross over-regulation of this resource via the wildly out-dated and confusing stumpage system is in dire need of updating. No wonder the US can constantly challenge us on softwood issues related to subsidies when they get to essentially judge companies business decisions on harvesting at every step, locking them into crazy business plans that force them into looking not much farther than about 5 years. Very hard to manage with that kind of restriction.
Mr. Campbell is out of touch with the province. For those of you who voted for him, enjoy the lack of services and the coming 33% Hydro increase. For those of you who complain, get off your butts and do something about it... or maybe just whine and continue to drink beer.
If you want to do something about it, sign the upcoming Petition against the HST. If enough British Columbians sign Campbell will rescind that tax. He'll never chance a vote on it by the people if enough signatures are received to force one. As Premier, it's his job to yield to pressure. And ours to apply it. There is no better way than to add your name to the Petition after April 6th, when it officially kicks off. WE do NOT have to "just take it", and listen to the lame-brained excuses offered for more taxes and higher fees and further cuts in services.
A 33% increase on hydro rates, along with the HST and an increase in Campbell's carbon tax in July.
Why would anyone with even a partial brain NOT sign the HST petition?
I'll sign for sure!

Forestry folks should've laid off quite a few people before, what with all those pine trees dying from those nasty heartless beetles. Fewer trees, fewer employees. It ain't rocket science.
