Prince George, B.C.- The People's Action Committee for Healthy Air (PACHA) has announced it will hold a meeting in the Millar Addition on Wednesday to talk about formaldehyde.

The meeting follows  revelations last week of  unexplained levels of formaldhyde in the area in August of 2008.  The information was  passed to  the PG AIR roundtable, but  there was no  retesting done at the time, nor was there an effort to make the results public.

The Ministry of the  Environment is  now scheduled to conduct a new series of tests.

“ This issue has really been a wake up call for the residents of Prince George. People are calling us and emailing us with their concerns, they are scared that the Government is not looking out for them and their health” said Dave Fuller President of PACHA.   “ Whether or not these results are corroborated, this may be the last straw for some residents who see that 40 years of relative inaction on the part of government and industry to deal with this problem, of the air making people sick, in an effective manner. I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone undertake a class action suit against industry and government over the issue. At this point it won’t be PACHA but there are a lot of angry frightened people who are becoming desperate for change”

At the meeting PACHA hopes to have information about what formaldehyde is and why it is a concern. The possible sources of Formaldehyde in Prince George,  what is being done by PGAIR and the Ministry of the Environment in terms of retesting and what PACHA and the Miller Addition Residents have planned to find out whether the past tests were accurate or not.

PACHA  plans to invite the Mayor and Council,   Northern Health, the Ministry of Environment, MLA’s and others.

The meeting is set for Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the gyum of Sacred Heart School on Patricia Boulevard.

Cheers
could be as simple as someone tampering with a sampling station. Start with the easy explanations before hyperventilating.
Sure thing Gamblor...Tampering..

That`s why they didn`t do any follow ups..

Next time your smoke detector/CO2 detector alarms goes off...Ignore it,it must be wrong..."Tampering" right.

No offense but that is the lamest thing I have ever heard.
That tampering must've been going on for the past 10, 20 or 30 years!

I can remember walking about 10 blocks to Sunshine Press on Kingway.

The air was awful, that morning, and when I got there my eyes were all red and swollen up.

Every man, woman, child, cat, dog and moose knew that the yellow stink comes from the pulp mills.

Driving northward on Hwy 97, vehicles must enter a virtual wall of stench at the top of Peden Hill, even before descending into the bowl ... I can still remember the way that stench clamped an instant headache down on my forehead.

Even then, there must've been people being paid a good salary to know what this signifies when inflicted upon the general population on a daily basis, year after year. Jeez.

This calls for ACTION now. No more stopping for more monitoring, no more stalling with these "Hmmm, can we get away with this?" studies. ACTION NOW.
.
Is this why we have had three teens with AML. which is supposed to be so rare[600 in all of Canada]?
Maybe the sample was taken in a funeral home parking lot. Don't they use formaldelhyde?
@ Duffer...No the tests were not taken there..The test were in two different spots..one was taken in Fort George Park..

The reading there was 1200 micrograms.

The highest acceptable Provincial level is 65 micrograms..

Another sample taken in a DIFFERENT SPOT was almost 1000 micrograms.

I am sure Mr. Duffer that people with cancer and asthma and other problems wouldn`t find your comment that amusing...

You were trying to be funny weren`t you?
The funeral home? Did you pull that one out of your ass, man? (Someone had to say it...)

I like to believe we're all being slowly poisoned by a combination of our industries and our reliance on our automobiles. It would be nice if this poisoning were to stop. Please?
Good luck getting responsible MLA's to attend. Shirley Bond and Pat Bell have run away from their offices every single time a protest has been held at their offices. They run like deer at the first sign of public display. Sure retesting will be done but rest assured the results will show very low formeldahyde levels during the test. Releases are controlled and timed to prevent ever showing up on a scheduled testing day.
We the people are entitled to know who uses
Formaldehyde in their operations and exactly how much they allow to escape or dump into our environment. The same goes for any other toxic chemicals used in our environment.

It's a pretty simple thing really. For our own gov't to not give us the answers we are entitled to, is criminal IMO.
The most important man-made source of formaldehyde is automotive
exhaust from engines not fitted with catalytic converters (Berglund et
al., 1984; Guicherit & Schulting, 1985).

Formaldehyde is naturally formed in the troposphere during the
oxidation of hydrocarbons. These react with OH radicals and ozone to
form formaldehyde and/or other aldehydes as intermediates in a series
of reactions that ultimately lead to the formation of carbon monoxide
and dioxide, hydrogen, and water (Zimmermann et al., 1978; Calvert,
1980).

Of the hydrocarbons found in the troposphere, methane occurs in the
highest concentration (1.18 mg/m3) in the northern hemisphere. Thus,
it provides the single most important source of formaldehyde (Lowe et
al., 1981).

Terpenes and isoprene, emitted by foliage, react with the OH radi-
cals, forming formaldehyde as an intermediate product (Zimmermann et
al., 1978). Because of their short life-times, this potentially impor-
tant source of formaldehyde is only important in the vicinity of vege-
tation (Lowe et al., 1981). The processes of formaldehyde formation and
degradation are discussed in section 4.

Formaldehyde is one of the volatile compounds formed in the early
stages of decomposition of plant residues in the soil (Berestetskii et
al., 1981).

Get rid of the clunkers, and stop plants from decomposing.
Not having city officials, M.O.E., MLA's at the meeting will be a benefit. Why let these people have a stage to promote their propaganda agenda. They have had ample time to do retesting to see if the initial results were flawed but instead swept the results under the carpet and hoped no one would be any the wiser. Rogers will want to study it, the M.O.E. will be decidedly quiet as they are on all emission issues, and the MLA's will claim ignorance of the facts.
Superheated, if you truly believe that plants and clunkers are the cause of formaldehyde levels being about 20 times the acceptable level, then I have a bridge to sell you.

Finger-pointing threads like this are the reason why nothing ever gets done.

Round and round we go.
No, faxman and Grant, I wasn't being funny, and I didn't pull this from anywhere on my body. The people doing these tests will test where they feel they will get the highest counts, the same as the people that want low counts will get the samples from where and when it is good for them. There are always different circumstances in every situation. I have worked downtown close to the Millar addition for 35 years and I am happy to say I am fine. Perhaps I am just lucky, I don't know.
This monitoring should be an ongoing practice at least until such time there is no detectable odour by any resident.

This testing should be continuous and sites selected based on the number of reports from any area or direct request of any resident.

rotting plants and clunkers? The techno-speak at the very least shows the ability to read, possibly backed with actual experience. If you know so much, why on earth as a resident knowing we have this problem , you have not yet spoken up? Why are you not heavily involved. Surely you know what this is doing to you, your spouse, and your children?

Formaldehyde is produced by those natural processes, but not even close to the quantities measured. Nature has a cool way of dealing things until humans start abusing the area. it is human activity, IMO mostly industrial, that is producing these things and it is humans that must fix it.

I believe with the technology available today, there should be a law for virtually or even actually zero emissions into the water or the air. The only thing industry should be permitted to spew is profits and CLEAN air and water.
Goggled: Formaldehyde is one of the most versatile chemicals and is a basic building block to many important industries, Formaldehyde is used
to manufacture resins; as an intermediate for synthesizing other
chemicals and is also directly used without further processing. The
various applications of formaldehyde as resins, as an intermediate
and as itself are described below :
As Resins : The largest amount of formaldehyde finds application
in the manufacture of Resins, viz., Phenol Formaldehyde (PF), Urea
Formaldehyde (UF) and Melamine Formaldehyde (MF) - which finds
applications in laminates, plywood, MDF, particle board and hard
boards.

Must be the Mills.
Duffer...You are a fool..You hear me,a fool...The People in Millar Addition complained of watering eyes,stinky air,breathing troubles.

That is why the tests were done, you think the tests should have been done a hundred miles away from where people are complaining...

You think these experts deliberatly poison the tests!!!!!!

You are thick headed fool.

I suggest you are one of Gordon Campbell`s 210 PAB Public affairs bureau that are all over the Internet defending this criminal government.

Either that or you have inhaled too much toxic air and your brain isn`t functioning properely.

Rude, you bet, your feeble comment is rude,oh yea!!!!

All the air testers are criminals attempting to flaw the air tests?????

Why would they hide the tests????

Why didn`t they say....We need to retest because the last testers are all criminal and they tested the air inside an enbalmed corpse!!!!!!!

Get a life MAN!!!!!!!!!
Grant, I would look in the mirror if I were you.
Mr PG, at least I bothered to look up some facts. What are you basing your opinion on? It is so easy to blame industry for all the problems in your world.
"The only thing industry should be permitted to spew is profits and CLEAN air and water."

What kind of dream world are you living in Loki? You must live in a cave and use leaves instead of paper products.
"It is so easy to blame industry for all the problems in your world."

It's easy to blame them because they are the primary culprits. It's not like it's a huge secret in this town. You can try and blame decomposing plants all you want, but everyone knows the truth, even you I suspect.

But don't worry, industry will be allowed to continue to pollute because jobs and the economy are involved. The whole idea of PACHA is just to make it look like something is being done, when in reality it's just a bunch of people talking. We all know everything will remain status quo.
How do you know that MrPG? Do you have data and facts we don't know about? Have you done some testing?
