Prince George, B.C.- RCMP in Prince George now say the crashes on Highway 16 east of Prince George this morning, were not as bad as first thought.
Back from the scene of the crashes, officers say one,  about 35 kilometres west of Purden Lake Park involved a semi tractor trailer that went off the road.   That section of highway was down to single lane alternating traffic for some time. The driver, a 43 year old man from Alberta,  was taken to hospital with minor facial injuries.  He has been charged under the Motor Vehicle act with  Driving Too Fast for Conditions.
The other crash was about 5 kilometres further east at Longworth where 5 vehicles went off the road. Police say  that crash happened when several vehicles were passed by an eastbound white pick up truck which caused the leading vehicle to lose  control and go off the road.  Four vehicles  quickly followed suite due to the icy conditions at the time.  Charges have not been laid against the  5 vehicle drivers and none are contemplated.  Injuries were minor.
The driver of the offending pick up truck did not stop, and police are not sure if  that driver knew the result of his/her actions.
Black ice has been blamed as playing a part in the crashes.
There has been no word of any serious injuries.

Sounds like someone panicked, unless the white pick up actually did cut them off.
metalman.
The accident is blamed on black ice...

I am wondering if the black ice happened because the snow banks along that highway are not plowed back enough.
Every year along Highway 16 East there are issues. They do not push the snowbanks back far enough, and then the water melts back onto the road.

I worked out that way a few years ago. There was a heavy rain in February, and then it froze. They had to shut the highway down because there was nowhere for the water to escape. The banks on either side held on the road surface and it froze smooth like a skating rink.

That being said I hope they catch the white pickup who appears to be the cause of this whole mess. At least the injuries were minor.
