Prince George, B.C.- RCMP in Prince George now say the crashes on Highway 16 east of Prince George this morning, were not as bad as first thought.
Back from the scene of the crashes, officers say one, about 35 kilometres west of Purden Lake Park involved a semi tractor trailer that went off the road. That section of highway was down to single lane alternating traffic for some time. The driver, a 43 year old man from Alberta, was taken to hospital with minor facial injuries. He has been charged under the Motor Vehicle act with Driving Too Fast for Conditions.
The other crash was about 5 kilometres further east at Longworth where 5 vehicles went off the road. Police say that crash happened when several vehicles were passed by an eastbound white pick up truck which caused the leading vehicle to lose control and go off the road. Four vehicles quickly followed suite due to the icy conditions at the time. Charges have not been laid against the 5 vehicle drivers and none are contemplated. Injuries were minor.
The driver of the offending pick up truck did not stop, and police are not sure if that driver knew the result of his/her actions.
Black ice has been blamed as playing a part in the crashes.
There has been no word of any serious injuries.
