Prince George, B.C. – School District 57 still has a lot of work to do to deal with a funding shortfall even though it’s budget has been increased by $1.8 million dollars.
The School District was facing a shortfall of $7 million dollars for this year, but the increase in dollars from Victoria will trim that back to $5.2 million.
That means there will still need to be some school closures.
The Board continues its consultation process with stakeholders, and will present its final plan at the School District’s regular Board meeting on March 30th.
The Board has been considering the closure of eleven schools and reconfiguration of three others.

The school district committee report mentioned that while everything else has shrunk, the central board office has grown. I've been told they have 12 or more district head principals for things like busses, computer data systems, educational advice, maintenance schedules, and government feedback. Salaries and benefits at 150 grand each that sounds like a good place to save 2 million or so every year. Add that to the 2 million they'll find in district infrastructure and you're looking at 4 million. And wow none of those cuts would do much to effect my kids at school.
