VANCOUVER - The Province will contribute $25 million towards accelerating the search for a cure for spinal cord injury in British Columbia to mark the start of the 25th anniversary celebration of Rick Hansen's momentous Man in Motion World Tour, Premier Gordon Campbell
announced today.

"The 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen's incredible Man in Motion World Tour is a perfect way to wrap up the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games," said Premier Campbell. "Throughout the Games, athletes with physical disabilities showed the world what they can do, and this $25 million will help others with disabilities succeed against the odds. I want to thank Rick and his foundation for everything they have done to help people here in British Columbia and around the world."

The Ministry of Health Services will contribute $11 million over seven years. This contribution will help to establish the Rick Hansen Institute globally and ensure that B.C. builds on its record of outstanding leadership and support in the field of spinal cord injury.

The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General will continue to provide $2 million each year as part of the B.C. Neuro-Trauma Fund. These funds will support the Rick Hansen Foundation's leadership and the 25th anniversary campaign, which will generate additional support and funds to continue to accelerate progress.

"There has been so much progress in this field since I embarked on my Man in Motion world tour 25 years ago," said Rick Hansen, president and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation. "I can't think of a better way to celebrate our successes and prepare for the future. This will help us launch our global institute and position us to take on what will be our greatest challenge yet. It will help to carry the momentum and spirit of the Paralympic and Olympic Games forward into the future to connect the world and continue to accelerate progress."

Without a doubt,this is a good cause.
But this is some serious sucking up by somebody looking for brownie points!
Welcome to politics!
Damn if you do, damn if you don't. Someone always has to put an angle on to a good news item.
With Gordon Campbell it's been proven that our cynicism is often well justified, even when it comes to a seemingly "good news item" like this one.

He, and his government, seem to have refined the art of convincing us that they're "doing something" really new and signifigant when often they're not doing anything more than what would've been done anyways.

I think most of us are getting tired of this kind of 'hype' and self-serving double-talk. $ 25 million contributed to a very worthy cause right NOW, might make some difference to the rate of progress in spinal trauma research and rehabilitation. That's what his government seeks credit for funding, but that's not the way it's being funded.

Why doesn't Campbell just tell us the truth for once instead of all the pretense?
Another phony announcement from Gordon Campbell...

Stephen Harper has committed $13.5 million dollars over 3 years...

Gordon Campbell has committed $25 million over 7 years...Rick Hansen finishes his campaign in 2012...

That means that Campbell`s contribution(BC Taxpayer) won`t be there until after all the hoopla...First off Gordon Campbell will be gone this year....

Secondly, committments going out 7 years are worth squat!....How much is he putting in this year?..Next year? 2012?....

Campbell`s announcements are always vague dreams that get cancelled, stopped or reneged...

BY 2020...by 2030....And last point,Gordon Campbell has no money..it`s taxpayers money, where is money for insulin pumps, money for the autistic children, money for Special Olympics?

Gordon Campbell is a Habitual liar...

Where the hell has the gaming revenue gone? There was a moral contract that a %percentage of gaming revenue would fund arts, sports, disabled, now Campbell has scooped the money for general revenue.

Lastly,Campbell has no authority to committ funds beyond his political life, and his political life is DEAD/DONE/he is a liar with no mandate, his word is worth shit!
So what's it like carrying around so much hate? Must be pretty awful.
