VANCOUVER - The Province will contribute $25 million towards accelerating the search for a cure for spinal cord injury in British Columbia to mark the start of the 25th anniversary celebration of Rick Hansen's momentous Man in Motion World Tour, Premier Gordon Campbell
announced today.
"The 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen's incredible Man in Motion World Tour is a perfect way to wrap up the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games," said Premier Campbell. "Throughout the Games, athletes with physical disabilities showed the world what they can do, and this $25 million will help others with disabilities succeed against the odds. I want to thank Rick and his foundation for everything they have done to help people here in British Columbia and around the world."
The Ministry of Health Services will contribute $11 million over seven years. This contribution will help to establish the Rick Hansen Institute globally and ensure that B.C. builds on its record of outstanding leadership and support in the field of spinal cord injury.
The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General will continue to provide $2 million each year as part of the B.C. Neuro-Trauma Fund. These funds will support the Rick Hansen Foundation's leadership and the 25th anniversary campaign, which will generate additional support and funds to continue to accelerate progress.
"There has been so much progress in this field since I embarked on my Man in Motion world tour 25 years ago," said Rick Hansen, president and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation. "I can't think of a better way to celebrate our successes and prepare for the future. This will help us launch our global institute and position us to take on what will be our greatest challenge yet. It will help to carry the momentum and spirit of the Paralympic and Olympic Games forward into the future to connect the world and continue to accelerate progress."
