Prince George, B.C.- “As a Minister I am absolutely committed, as a Government we are absolutely committed to do everything possible to reducing the impact of the mid-term timber supply. Jim Snetzinger (Chief Forester) is currently doing a timber supply review in the Prince George Timber Supply area and much of the information he has been preparing indicates there is significant opportunity to mitigate the mid-term timber supply.” Those are the comments of Minister of Forests and Range, Pat Bell, speaking about the recent Wood Markets report which said that beause of the damage done to the forests by the mountain pine beetle, the peak availability of sawlogs, and output would occur within 3-5 years leading to possible further plant closures.
According to Bell, the Wood Markets Report was based on the premise that nothing was being done to protect a mid-term timber supply in the wake of the mountain pine beetle epidemic. “Over the next few years, through the work of the Chief Forester’s office and professionals across the province, we’ll be developing good options to make sure that we have a strong and vibrant forest industry moving forward.”
