“The Fight for Free Speech Continues in Afghanistan…and here in Canada”

Today of all days.  Today, as I was contemplating how to best convey my sympathies to the family of Prince George’s own Cpl. Darren Fitzpatrick. There in my morning paper was an article outlining the actions of 16 professors at the University of Regina that offended me and is an affront to every Canadian soldier!

Cpl. Darren Fitzpatrick was just 21-years-old when he died on Saturday.  He succumbed to injuries he suffered in a blast from an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan on March 6th.  Cpl. Fitzpatrick, a member of the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, fought to live long enough at a hospital in Edmonton to say good-bye to his family.

According to his commanding officer, Cpl. Fitzpatrick’s family’s one request was that “his sacrifice be acknowledged”.  I know that I join the residents in Prince George and ‘most’ Canadians in recognizing Cpl. Fitzpatrick’s bravery and honouring his willingness to sacrifice his safety to help bring peace, security and freedom to the people of Afghanistan.

And yet….in Regina, a group of professors published an open letter asking for the withdrawal of Project Hero, a scholarship program for the children of our fallen soldiers.

Apparently, these “learned” individuals who influence the minds of their pupils every day, think “this program is a glorification of Canadian imperialism in Afghanistan” and they believe that the Afghan mission is “a military occupation of sovereign country.”  They don’t even like the name of the scholarship, Project Hero, because it might imply that Canada’s military activity in Afghanistan is heroic.

Our soldiers serving in Afghanistan ARE HEROIC!  And I find the views of these professors offensive and insulting.  However…they have the right to express their opinion.  Do they not see the irony in the fact that they owe their right to this free speech to the willingness of our soldiers to fight for fundamental freedoms.
While the professors’ right to air their views is respected by their employer, the University of Regina has refused to capitulate and the scholarship program will remain in place.

Unfortunately, the issue of freedom of speech has played out much differently in another province.  Ann Coulter’s views are offensive to many in Canada and around the world.  I don’t agree with her controversial approach nor many of her opinions.  However, she has the right to speak her mind.  That’s not just the American way…it’s the Canadian way and it’s enshrined in OUR laws.

Coulter delivered a speech at the University of Western Ontario on Monday and was scheduled to speak at the University of Ottawa the next day.  Instead, threats of violent action and protest by those who disagree with her views, forced the cancellation of her appearance.  Her opponents should not view this as a victory.

This is a case of “free speech for some but not others”.  Mob rule and the threat of violence defeated free speech in Canada this week.  How ironic that our soldiers are in Afghanistan right now fighting for the right of the Afghan people to freely express their opinions without fear of harm.

Jay sure knows how to suck and blow hard at the same time! He can carry on about freedom of speech and at the same time make a mockery of freedom of information. Jay; just comply with the parliamentary order issued in December dealing with the Afghan detainee-related documents.
The Honourable Member confuses victims with heroes.
I removed the Canadian flag from my home on the day when our soldiers joined Bush's invasion of Afghanistan. I will replace it on the day when the last Canadian soldier departs.

I raise the Canadian flag as much as I want to! Canada is a great country and it always will be - inspite of idiotic politicians and their stupid policies!

Mr. Hill and his party's nineteen fiftyish dinosaur thinking and acting are over the hill.

Greatness is relative and I see Canada's deteriorating under right-wing governments pretending to be "open and accountable" while hiding their erosion of our liberties behind a smokescreen of deceipt.
Interesting comments, Canada seems to be doing quite well compared to the rest of the world. American bashing, old news. Sure they have warts but most seem to like the life style. Why do millions try to get in every year. Whats the alternative?

Those professors, doesn't surprise me at all. Most of them live in an isolated vacuum of government handouts.

People seem to think if we remove western influence out of the middle east they will all go their happy medieval ways. Boy are you sadly mistaken. We, our way of life is evil to them. Radical Islam would take over the middle east. Israel will use their nukes, India and Pakistan will get into it. Don't forget Pakistan has nukes and is under threat to be taken over by radical Islam. While all this is going on Russia is looking at China with more suspician every day.

Don't believe me, just stand back and watch. Those poor misguided profs. would be ducking for cover as medieval radical islam have no use for education.

Those Profs should be very glad there are some people willing to go over the wall to protect their warm pink behinds.
Another thing the offspring of these professors I understand get free tuition. Why is the taxpayer giving these offspring a free ride. These profs. who have done nothing, except dishonor our soldiers. They should hold their heads in shame.
The zionists control freedom of speech in this country, and the real reason why our troops are attacked is not allowed to be discussed in mainstream media. We don't have freedom of speech where it counts in this country, because we don't have freedom of the press... we have monopoly capitalism creating synergies with consolidated media ownership under one ideology (most notably in newspapers and TV media).

What happened in Ottawa is a side show of misguided leftist thugs that don't have the courage of conviction to let their opinions stand on their own and instead resort to threats of violence to intimidate others from opposing them. Two wrongs don't make a right. The professor at Ottawa university should be fired for his abuse of the intellectual debate. He provided fuel for Ann Coulter to denigrate Canada to the world audience with hateful examples of discourse.

That said the real problem isn't the wacko
jobs at the universities, so much as it is the misrepresentation of our values that the media claims to represent. A MSM that is wholly owned in this country by an ideology that holds allegiance to a foreign entity with diabolically different values than most Canadians hold.

Last January David Petreaus the US commander of CENTCOM, which includes the Middle East other than Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank, sent a presentation to Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Micheal Mullen. In this presentation he essentially laid out the bare truth that the fuel for the insurgency that is killing allied troops is the provocations taken by Israel against the Palestinians and the unequal American policy in regards to their rights as humans. General Petreaus requested he be granted operational jurisdiction over Gaza and the West Bank in order to have the ability to rein in the Israeli's and maintain credibility in the rest of the wider Muslim world. The request was backed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and sent to the president who then killed it on arrival in turning the Petraeus request down flat as not possible.

President Obama is surrounded by zionist Israeli first career politicians. His chief of staff is a former IDF solider, and everyone in his cabinet, almost as a litmus test, are all zionist sympathizers. One would think Israel couldn't have it any better... all Obama asked was that Israel refrain from building more settlements on disputed land until final settlement talks have concluded for a two state solution... a two state solution that Israel claims it wants, but undermines with its fragmentation policy of claiming pockets of land all throughout the final settlement areas under dispute.

Meanwhile Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, is publishing articles like the one in last months Atlantic magazine telling Obama, 'Stop Iran or I Will' making it clear the US president is his boy out to do his bidding. Otherwise he makes the veiled threat that if Israel goes down, the world goes down with it, as Israeli missiles can reach all the major capitals of Europe and the nuclear fall out would be global.

So Obama sees that he needs to be seen as providing diplomacy that both supports his political allies in Israel, while also confronting the realities of the Pentagon sending messages that Israeli policies are counter productive to our efforts in Afghanistan. Obama sends his Vice President Joe Biden to heep praise on the Israeli's and try and bring them around to negotiations... Israel announces 1600 new settlement homes during Biden's visit... basically slapping America in the face diplomatically. Then the Israeli politicians, as if on cue all start to make wild claims as facts that they have every right to build settlements... and even if America asks them to stop they will not... and that they don't see this as a problem for Palestinian statehood.

Obama gives Netanyahu a second opportunity to patch things up by granting him an audience at the White House on short notice this week. The Obama administration sent out signals through the APIAC convention this week via no less than Hillary Clinton that the US would like to find a way forward and were basically backing down to Israeli demands. So what does Netanyahu do? He orders 20 new settlement homes be announced in East Jerusalem just prior to his meeting with Obama... the very thing that cause the flap and embarrassment the previous week in the first place. Clearly that is an insult directed at Obama and a poke in the eye prior to any meeting with the president to tell the American President who is the boss. So Obama takes a brief break from the 4-hour meeting with Netanyahu to have a meal with his wife, and doesn't ask his guest to join him (probably to get an opportunity to find out what is up with the new settlement announcements?).

The next day zionism basically declares war on Obama. MSM goes in to full attack mode as 'Obama snubbed Netanyahu', and 'Obama is allowing Iran to get the nuke'... Obama's greatest mistake was that he passed their health care bill that is designed to bankrupt America through a forced insurance scheme that makes a monopoly capitalist mockery of universal health care. Obama fell for the trap and they will hang him in it.

The fact of the matter is that Israel wants ethnocentric based rights that fall on tribal lines of organization that views people in different classes that have different sets of rights... rather than everyone as a universal class of humans with the same rights. Israel pushes the two-state solution only in order to buy time to create more facts on the ground that preclude any possibility of a viable Palestinian state being free from Israeli control over their everyday lives. Israel wants apartheid in practice, just not in name. Its this apartheid that provides the fuel for insurgents against the west throughout the middle east. The west is no longer seen as an honest broker when Hillary Clinton tells AIPAC that 'the world should see no light between Israel and the US'.

It is to late for a two-state solution and has been for decades now... Israel needs to own up to the fact the Palestinians have rights as humans that are every bit as universal as their own rights, and if they wish to claim to be a democracy that respects the rule of law, then they need to realize that they are one state with two people... all of which should be equal under the law.

Canada has taken the position under the Harper government, of which Jay Hill belongs to, that Canada is on Israel's side and supports the 'two-state' solution of no light between Canada and Israeli policy. This is seriously damaging for Canada's reputation internationally, it undermines our national values of universal rights for all and the rule of law, and as a result it enables the extremists to incite violence against our troops in Afghanistan as General Petraeus himself is claiming.

Canada right now is betting against the Pentagon and for Netanyahu and his settlement policy. I don't think if Canadians were properly informed of this they would agree with the Harper governments position, and I don't think the MSM will ever report the real and true facts of this conflict no matter how many Canadians arrive home in body bags... because the real news runs counter to their ideological agenda of supporting Israel at all costs. Right now they will attack Obama for daring to cross their agenda and questioning the settlement policy, but betting against the Pentagon is never a good bet IMO.

Free Speech in Canada does not exist where it counts because our media is controlled by politically correct zionist ideology, and an abusive hate speech law that is designed to protect those that are the most racists and hateful of them all.

The Canadian conservatives, liberals, and ndp, all have a big role to play in the decline of discourse in this country and the level of misinformation that is passing as news and policy in this country. They need to learn some history and spend some time in self reflection IMHO.
wow, I suggest you back up and start over.
It would be helpful if you could be specific about the flaw in the logic as you see it. Do your own research first and I'm open to any suggestions you have that would counter what I have wrote. Having two sets of rules does work though.
should have read two sets of rules does 'not' work though....
Speaking of professors....Tenure breeds mediocrity. So they say.
