City Councillor Garth Frizzell reaches  to pick up garbage at Millennium Park
Prince George, B.C.- This Sunday, it is time once again to get involved in the annual spring clean up of the City.
Prince George Mayor Dan Rogers says he wants to build the mantra “Clean to the Core”. While the City recently launched a downtown clean up crew, the Sunday event is a volunteer effort with free bags provided to those who would like them. The event is slated from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The R.E.A.P.S. office will provide the bags, just call ahead and they will make sure they have them all ready for you to pick up at their Gorse Street office ( 1950 Gorse). The number to call is 250-561-7327.
( at right, some gulls attend the news conference and do their  best to clean up some bread  crumbs at  Millennium Park)
The City has set up several collection points for bags of litter to be dropped:
  • 5th and Killoren
  • Ospika-Andres Road
  • 3rd and Watrous
  • 2nd and George
  • College Heights Secondary
  • Parkridge Heights (Bunce Road and Park Drive)
  • Hudson’s Bay Slough on Queensway.
North of the Nechako River residents are encouraged to take the litter to the Foothills landfill site, or, failing that, bags can be left on the side of the road and City Crews will pick them up. “I will have staff out patrolling the whole City on Sunday” says Sean LeBrun, Supervisor of Parks and Solid Waste Services for the City of Prince George.
You can call pre-register your participation (although not necessary) at www.pitch-in.ca
Mayor Rogers says the City wants to thank all the groups which have already been out trying to clean up the roadsides and trails “We are eager to look at partnerships to clean up our community.”

I really hate to be cynical, because I agree with and support the Spring Clean up, but I am asking myself how long the garbage picking went on for after the photo op was finished?
I can tell you, the clean up lasted until the area was clear of litter. Then the group crossed First Avenue and cleaned up a two block stretch of the CN side of the road.

I still cannot understand why this type of clean-up is necessary.

Why do people continue to throw away their garbage???

Have some respect for your community people!!

There are certainly enough garbage cans around town these days that people should be able to hold onto their garbage until they get to a garbage can... rather than simply throwing it out the window.
I agree dan. I look around some areas of town and see all the litter and wonder what the people were thinking when they threw their trash on the ground. Laziness and ignorance at its worst.
I've seen people chuck whole bags of McDonalds, Tim Hortons all kinds of garbage right out the window of their cars and they could care less how many people see them do it, they just give you the bird if you retaliate. Just a bunch of pigs.
I have to agree people just don't care, and the worst part is they are teaching their kids to be just as bad.Take a walk through some of the school grounds, such as College Heights Secondary, and it's fairly clear the kids are not concerned about the environment.
funny, I had a friend do that to me when I was driving. I stopped, back up, and told him to pick it up. Basically, I don't care what you do out of your vehicle, but nobody does that out of my vehicle.

Another thing, I hate is, seeing parents in a grocery store, open up packages of food and feed their children before they pay for it. What kind of message are you teaching the kids.
Jake, it is frustrating to see that kind of litter, but it could have blown in. it is a huge bowl that the school is located in.
Not only is Councillor Garth Frizzell Mr. Nice but also Mr Clean.

Now how can we get folks to pick up the poop that their dogs leave? This should NOT be the responsibility of the city of of the dog owner.
WHY CANT THOSE MORONS AT PG CITY WORKERS ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING !! PROBABLY NEED 5 IDIOTS TO HOLD A BAG, ONE TO RACK, ONE TO SIT IN THE TRUCK.ONE TO FLAG.ONE TO WELL ..... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ CITY WORKERS WHAT A JOKE
OH IF YOU THINK IAM WRONG WELL I WORKED THERE AND ITS A SCAM ON WHAT YOU THINK OUR MONEY GOES TO !! REASON LEFT BECAUSE SELF EMPLOYED BUT SERIOUS SOMEONE SHOULD TAKE A REAL HARD LONG LOOOOK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!YOU WOULD BE SUPRISED !!
That is very good to hear, Elaine. Kudos to all who participated!!
It can't be helped that there are so many inconsiderate people around. What we can help is to pitch in and do a spring clean to make our neighbourhoods look nice. Us folks in the Millar Addition are collecting garbage on Patricia Blvd.on Sunday, April 25 from 1:00 - 4:00. If any of you are Millar Addition residents, come on out even if it's for an hour...every bit counts!
