Prince George, B.C.- When it comes to the electrification of the Highway 37 corridor and mining in the Northwest of B.C., Tahltan Chief Rick MacLean says things have to change.
Chief MacLean told the Minerals North conference he appreciates the efforts to have the Tahltan businesses involved “That’ s very important to us going forward” but adds there needs to be a shift. “We’ve had the jobs, we’ve had contracts, but its more than just jobs and contracts. We have to look at community development and social infrastructure which is crucial to any further development within our territory.”
The environmental assessment is now underway on the planned power line along highway 37. That power line is to run from Terrace to Bob Quinn Lake, and will open up the region for development while reducing the use of diesel generators.
MacLean says the Tahltan are very concerned about the rate, the pace and scale of development the power line along highway 37 will bring. “In order for us to embrace the project we need to have a government to government relationship start.” MacLean says “That table has been set, there just isn’t any food on it.”
He says there needs to be work on revenue sharing, decision making, sustainable development planning is about to happen. “Sustainable development planning is really crucial to the success of the power line and sustainable mining”. He says while sustainable and mining are not words that fit well together, he believes if things are done properly “we can make that happen.”
