Victoria, B.C.- The Province has introduced new legislation it says will be the foundation for “a new future of electricity self sufficiency, job creation and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.”

Bill 17 advances 16 specific energy objectives by expediting clean energy  investments, protecting B.C. ratepayers, ensuring competitive rates, encouraging conservation, strengthening environmental protection and aggressively promoting regional job creation and First Nations' involvement in clean electricity development opportunities.

"The new Clean Energy Act opens the way to an exciting new age of economic growth and job creation by unleashing British Columbia's full potential in clean energy, power smart technologies, environmental stewardship and climate action," said Premier Gordon Campbell.

The Act  is set out in three areas:

1. Ensuring Electricity Self-Sufficiency at Low Rates;

Offers a new regulatory framework for long-term electricity planning, commitments to clean and renewable electricity generation, streamlined approval processes, and new measures to promote electricity efficiency and

conservation. It also strengthens protection for B.C. ratepayers.

 2. Harnessing B.C.'s Clean-Power Potential to Create Jobs in Every Region

The act will provide BC Hydro and renewable power producers the tools necessary to establish British Columbia as a clean-energy powerhouse that enables economic growth and job creation in every region. Key measures include:

* Ensuring projects ( including the Site C project and Highway 37 Transmission Line) will not be subject to unnecessary  lengthy and costly processes before the B.C. Utilities Commission, but  will still be subject to environmental assessments and ensuring the  Crown's obligations to First Nations are met

3. Strengthening Environmental Stewardship and Reducing Greenhouse Gases

The act enshrines in law measures the Province will take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, help customers save money through conservation and protect the environment.

Something smells funny with this legislation.
I don't trust this government, and I certainly don't trust anything they are doing right now.
Too much,too quickly.
Seems they have all kinds of things happening all of a sudden and I do have to wonder..why now?
What's really going on?
Is this a case of "let's baffle 'em with bullsh**t"?
Something is wrong.
And the demise of BCTC
"Ensuring projects ... will not be subject to unnecessary lengthy and costly processes before the B.C. Utilities Commission"

Shades of the decision by the BCUC not to pay Alcan the amount they wanted, and the way their decision was reversed, with the provincial government arguing Alcan's side. I presume that was a nuisance to Campbell, and now we won't have anything like it happen again.
Their strategy seems to be to throw so much at us that we can't keep track of it all.

Who can worry about the Olympic debt with the HST tax, government layoffs, site c project, gun/stab wound legislation, and now this.

I am sure there will be more to come before the paint dries on this one as well.

One thing is for sure... BC is open for business! It is just too bad that big business is all they seem to care about. It appears that they do know how to get things done, but focus all their energy into things that are not always in the best interest of the general public.
Looks like every river in BC is open to damming for hydropower generation so that we can supply California with cheap energy. Sorta takes your mind off the HST and the BCRAIL scandal and the Billions in cost overruns and all the lies and so on and so forth.
Oh, I am a Gordo supporter. But I would not be extending an open wrist to him right now. I think he is doing as much as he can, before he has to do stage exit right. Thus he has chosen to be the fall guy.
Relax ammonra and dan - there are 290,000 rivers in BC, and only 40 have renewable energy projects.

So instead of your fits of jealousy - why dont you go and get off your behind and build one? Oh, I know, you are too lazy, and expect gov't handouts.
