One Million Bucks To Fix Up The Cenotaph

By Ben Meisner

While no one could argue that the Cenotaph in front of city hall needed some sprucing up, the story dug up and appearing on Opinion250 written by Elaine Macdonald paints a picture that would make most contractors blush.

The total cost of the project will now top out at $1 million bucks.

Now before you say that seems okay by you, take a drive by the hall and see what you got for your money, which may change your mind.

Macdonald points out in her story that the city spent $847,000 dollars plus tax, on the project. The province as part of its Olympic legacy program agreed to pay half up to a maximum of $500,000 dollars. While it may come as a surprise, you are also a provincial taxpayer, so what pocket did it come from?

When the bids went out they came in at $ 967,777.00 last year, so the city lopped off the irrigation, tree planting and some shrubs. That revised bid came in at $847 thousand dollars.

So now they are back at it and while the City will have to admit down the road that a project that was supposed to cost $950,000 dollars now comes in at $ 1 million, the bigger question is, did we get our bang for our buck for the million dollars we are dropping on the re-build?

Look around, there are some very special homes with some very special yards in the city sitting on more than 1 acre of land that cost far less than a million. But then the local home owners didn’t spend just under 80 thousand dollars drawing up a plan.

Every $500,000 dollars means a 1% increase in your taxes no matter how you cut it, even if the city doesn’t plan to have the trees to grow that money in place until later this spring.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

I have great respect for our war dead, and the men and women that represent our Armed Forces. But a million bucks for this??? IDL sure seems to be cashing in on allot of Government projects of late. Nine million for the Domano/Highway 16 intersection comes to mind. Twelve plus million for a bridge over troubled water. And now, don't they have the contract for the remainder of River Road?

And it goes on and on. Remember the pedestrian tunnel under Highway 16 by Northland Chrysler? A million bucks for that fiasco, which is barely used, just vandalized!

Did I mention our roads? OK I won't this time, but you get my drift.

Would there be a few kick backs happening in the inner circle? Hmmmmmmmmmmm, got to wonder!
Stop me if I sound out of line but...

What the hell? Why does it need an irrigation system for 6 months of the year? Here's a crazy thought.... hire somebody to hose it down a couple of times per week when we're in a dry spell.

Our veterans were/are very prudent individuals, and I'm quite sure they would be happy somebody got a job keeping things green... rather the handing over the green to some construction firm for their bank deposit.
The irrigation system is actually being installed as part of a a mob control system for when people gather in the plaza to protest the tax increases. :-)
I noticed my jaw dropped on that post. LOL
I would have to agree with above posts. I had family in WW2, and do appreciate the fact that we have a place that people can go to remember their efforts.

But I almost choked on my cheerios when I read that the plans cost $80,000... A lot of money for a cement walkway with what looks like a rectangle planter in the middle of it.
This is just another example of yesterdays news/post concerning who is exactly running our town. How is there no accountability for the city's descisions to spend money faster than we can be taxed for it. If our elected officials are not the one's making the descisions, what will it take to elect an council that is willing to sweep the autocrats from the golden tower. This is getting ridiculous that this just keeps on going and going and the tax hikes seemly will go indefinitely.
Who exactly got 80 grand to design a flat piece of concrete?
As a Korean war veteran I have just returned home from a revised of seven days of Korea. When I last saw Seoul in 1951 it was a pile of rubble. It has a population of 12 million people. They have built 21 bridges across the Han River which bisects the City.

There are no single family dwellings within the City. Everyone live in an apartment of which there are thousands. And through out South Korea there are many Cities that have many blocks of apartment buildings. Their focus was on education and technologies. It is in fact a beautiful country.

The inter changes and boulevards are all landscaped. Many of the trees are now in full bloom. I could go on forever. It is unbelievable that 2.5 million civilians died in the Korean War. Their country has risen out of ashes and become very beautiful.

The Korean Government paid all our expenses except half of the fair to Korea. Yes a million bucks for a sprinkler system is far to much. I installed a sprinkler system on our 65X 120 foot lot for under $300.00 I did use a cheap timer (42.00) but a pricey timer would cost more then $100.00
We know what the problem is at city hall in fact across our nation but know one has the balls to fix them I suspect there are to many hangers on to solve our solvency
Cheers
Errr...a million bucks to fix up a cenotaph that at best looks like a Red Green effort using left overs from a building supply outlet?

For that amount of Geld, let's at least hire a stone mason that can create something worthy of those who paid the ultimate price.
Spending that million bucks would have been fine with me if that had included a much needed face lift for that ugly faded brick facade building in the background - City Hall.

They sure built them ugly in those days.
Actually that is the colour of the brick. However, you are right. We should make that building look much more like a PG building.

Time to clad it in stucco or vinyl.
Thinking of ugly buildings. Nice to see the cladding come off what was the ugliest new building in town, Chances.

We have a supposed design panel in this town. Guess they don't recognize ugly.
