Gas Prices Jump 4 Cents a Litre

Prince George, B.C.-  Officially we are still three weeks away from the next long weekend,  and  summer doesn't arrive until the  21st of June.  So  there were plenty of surprised people today  when the price at the pumps jumped 4 cents a litre overnight.

The Canadian Centre for Policy Altrnatives Gas Gouge meter  indicates we are paying  6 cents a litre too much:

"With today's crude oil price of $86.07 USD per barrel and the US dollar at $1.02 CAD, the price of regular unleaded gasoline in Prince George should be $1.04 per litre at normal profit margins.

At a price of $1.099 per litre, you are paying 6.¢ per litre in pure excess profit. Across Canada, an extra margin of 6.¢ per litre generates an additional profit of 6. million dollars per day."

Just wait till that long weekend. This gives them 3 weeks to slowly increase the price over that 21 days. This way, there is no "price fixing". Just normal seasonal adjustments that happen at the same time by all fuel retailers for the same amount.

Nah, there is no price fixing or conspiracy. Its just normal economics the the price of fuel goes up at the beginning of the travel season. And all the retailers are just jumping on the same band wagon.

Riiigghhtt.
Supply and demand. Would most people stop buying if it were $2.00 a litre? Probably not.

To the gas companies, I didn't say that.
there's a downed rig in the gulf.. it'll be $1.50 buy may 15th :( they always have a reason right..
they always make up an excuse
It goes up in increment of 4 and five cents, comes down a penny at a time.
and the criminal Campbell is adding a bunch to the price of gas too in July isn't he? his "green " incentive...carbon tax...could it just be a people rip off so he can go to Hawaii and get drunk again ?
The cost of living going up + high taxes + high debt levels = lots of people signing the anti-hst petition. A large portion of the population is tapped out. They have nothing more to give.
"could it just be a people rip off so he can go to Hawaii and get drunk again ?"

Wow. Some people can't let things go. When was that, 100 years ago? I sure am glad there are perfect people in the world like BCRacer to set us all straight.

this might have something to do with it

about gasoline pricing from the national energy board
And what has Pat Bell to say about the issue? What about our MP's.

Price gouging is a time-honoured tradition, while our elected officials do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT IT.

Time for new leadership
sock it to me!
Bell has nothing to say that Campbell hasn't told him he could say. I doubt there is one Liberal that has had an independant thought since he took the reins.

And no MrPG I don't forget, and I don't have a criminal record either...
ronald: you must be new.
Not many believe the finite reserves theory. Few believe that our supply is now on the bottom side of the tank. Few believe that we will be out of petrolium in our life time.

Even fewer realize the impact on our technological state due to black gold.

More than that, there is barely a handful of people working in earnest towards a petrium based free future.

Sure, they make half hearted shows of this or that, then they are quickly proven unattainble due to technical constraints, economic factors, or just an unwillingness to appear to be moving away from big oil.

We should be driving affordable electric cars by now. We should be having Solar PV and solar thermal solutions as Standard components of most every structure. Wind should be a non-issue. And geo thermal has barely been extensively explored yet.

The problem as I see it is not limited technology or even knowledge. Necessity is the mother of invention, if there is a problem, someone will solve it. The problem is we are still operating on the old world paradimn of greed and virtual (if not literal) enslavement to satisfy that greed.
The difference between some perfect-in-every-way individuals who post here and Premier Gordon Campbell is that Campbell has apologized for the mistake he made.

It was accepted, he ran for re-election and he was elected again.

That seems to cause some perfect people a lot of sleepness nights.

Pity, only in B.C.
" I doubt there is one Liberal that has had an independant thought since he took the reins."

Funny how history keeps repeating itself! I remember how during the decade of BC NDP rule not a single NDP MLA spoke up with an opinion different from what was mandated as official party policy.

So, what is the whining all about?

From the competition Bureau:

Section 45 is the cornerstone cartel provision of the Competition Act. It makes it a criminal offence when two or more persons agree or arrange to prevent or lessen competition unduly or to unreasonably enhance the price of a good or service. This offence is known as a “conspiracy” and is punishable by a fine of up to ten million dollars, or imprisonment for a term of up to five years, or both.

In a prosecution of a conspiracy offence, the prosecutor must prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the accused had entered into an agreement or arrangement which, if implemented, would or would likely prevent or lessen competition unduly or enhance prices unreasonably. The courts have ruled that the word “unduly” expresses a notion of seriousness and significance. It is a combination of market power and behaviour likely to injure competition that makes a lessening of competition undue.

Maybe the gas companies can explain how they can all, on the same day, within a few hours of each other decide to raise their prices by the same amount if they have not 'conspired' with each other.

loki:I am not new I have been whatching oil production closely for 20 years.
It's not about runing out of oil it's about how much we can suck out per day.
Supply and demand are neck and neck and demand was winning the race before the recession. As for the alternatives I am all for them but nothing will beat the convienance and versatility and power of oil
I meant new to commenting on this site. Good to hear another voice.
I understand peak oil and its implications.

"nothing will beat the convienance and versatility and power of oil"

That is the heart of it.
In my experience, one will pay. Pay now, or pay way more later. What we are doing is taking the easy way and squandering it for the cheap and quick. That means that someone (our modern life of convenience) is gonna get a hurtin, real bad. Too bad it is going to be a closer generation than we would want.
Jumped from 101.9 to 113.9 up here in the Peace yesterday :( And yet in Calgary last week it was 89.8 at some stations.
I paid 84.9 in Edmonton earlier this week.
"And no MrPG I don't forget, and I don't have a criminal record either..."

Contrary to what you always post, neither does Gordon Campbell. He pleaded no contest and paid a fine, apolgized and moved on. Too bad you can't.
112.9 in lowermainland.
As of last night when I was grocery shopping, Save-On Gas Bar in Parkwood was still 105.9.
There are few of lifes problems that cannot be solved with the proper application of a highly explosive projectile.

Yup, they all ran out of their stored gas at the same time and I saw tank trucks at every gas station at pretty much the same time dropping off new fuel.
and yes MrPG, go ahead and defend the most notorius drunk driver of them all!! Gordo Drunken Campbell. We who pay his wages, will never forget what he did. He disgraced us all, in a foreign country. Our neighbour to the south no less!!

I hung out the bait for you MrPG the other day, and you took a great big bite. I never suggested you were Bruce Strachan, "Strachan" was never mentioned by me. But I do know now, who you are. And it was all started by you, and Ben reminding you, that he had the privaledge of knowing who you were, and you were, or had been, very much in the political know in the past, REMEMBER??? Should I take a guess at who you are. According to you, I have failed miserably on my identifications on other posters on here.

My first clue, is how you try to take us off of the subject of Gordo Drunken Campbell's impaired charge. Because he pleaded guilty, instead of going to trial, does not make it any less severe.

Just like you not getting caught over all these years, does not make your driving habbits right. You or Gordo, are not above the law.

Drunk driving, is drunk driving, no matter who does it!!! Think about that MrPG!!

As far as Gordon Campbell goes, I don't defend what he did. I do correct people when they spread misinformation and half-truths. I will call you on it every time. Sorry.

You know why I am, taxi? Who am I? Just because I guessed Strachan means nothing. I read the paper like you do, I suppose.

I am just a guy, not an ex-politican or current politican or anybody in the media that you might know. I've lived and worked here for 35 years.

But go ahead, keep your paranoid fantasies alive if you must.
"But I do know now, who you are. And it was all started by you, and Ben reminding you, that he had the privaledge of knowing who you were, and you were, or had been, very much in the political know in the past, REMEMBER??? "

You're confused. There was another poster on this site with a handle of "Mr. PG" (not MrPG) that Ben was referring to.

"Mr. PG" hasn't been back since Ben's comment.

Speaking of multiple handles, you had more than one going at one time, didn't you?
MrPG,

Its interesting how people react when they are challenged isnt it? They are far to used to being able to sit in a taxi or at tim hortons and whine but not have anybody express a differing opinion out of common courtesy.

I would love to see how they would fold under the pressure of actually having a job which had responsibility.

Oh, I'm totally used to taxi's rants and the type of person he is. He sits on a taxi for 12 hours a shift and complains how bad everything is. I guess I might feel the same way.

I have to admit, it was quite funny that he had me confused with the other "Mr. PG" and went off on a tirade and paraded around like a peacock thinking he had one over on me.

Nice try indeed.

Good night all! MrPG and Stompin Tom, be very careful how you slam another person's occupation. You know nothing about my background, and why I became a CAB driver. But I will tell you one thing, I have never stolen from my fellow man, as all politicians have, in one way or another.

So MrPG and Stompin Tom, please put a sign on your drunken jackets when you want a ride home some night. I will be the first to tell you to take the other company, you know, the one with the red and blue "Top Light"

How dare you call me down because I drive a taxi!! I PAY MY WAY IN THIS WORLD, ALWAYS HAVE, not like the drunken politicians!

Hey Kinsley, hey Belly, hey Hanson, hey DRUNKEN GORDO! The sponges of society, in my position, can get some very good advertising, or some very bad advertising. So what is it you want, GOOD or BAD?? Just something to think about. If I have 30 customers in a shift, and I tell them about something, and they each tell 30 other people, who each tell 30 other people.........how many people have been told so far??? Do the math big mouth!!

Everybody else, have a good day!!

"Good night all! MrPG and Stompin Tom, be very careful how you slam another person's occupation."

That's all you got out of my last couple of posts? I'll be waiting for my apology from you for accusing me of being someone who I am not, thank you very much.

"How dare you call me down because I drive a taxi!! I PAY MY WAY IN THIS WORLD, ALWAYS HAVE"

I pay my own way as well, but I don't expect others to pat me on the back for it. Grow up.
