Prince George. B.C.- The Western Silviculture Contractors Association has launched an online petition demanding the BC Government  make a commitment to grow more trees and plant more trees.

According to the Association, the mountain pine beetle has destroyed pine in 15 million hectares of forest. The Association says 3 to 6 million hectare of forest will not regenerate naturally and will require replanting, that would mean more than 6 billion trees would have to be replanted.

That is same amount of trees which have been planted in B.C. since 1971. The Association says “Trees need to be planted not only to cut them down again; we need to plant trees to have the option to cut them down again. Healthy forests are about having options.”

The Association’s petition calls for public support for three actions:
  1. Surveys to be done in the fall of 2010.  This will expedite the seedling planting process in 2010/11, and start the planning process for 2012.  The surveys are necessary to understand the true state of Forest Health and environmental obligations.
  2. Seedlings for 2012 must be ordered by NOV 15, 2011. If there is no plan by this date then 2012 will again be the smallest plant, and more tree planters will lose their jobs.
  3.  A call for the government to imagine that the positive choices made this year, will bring a healthier and more prosperous future.

If you log it, you must replant it.

That would make too much sense and cost the taxpayers more in the end anyway.

They are going to ride that pony for as long as they can. At least until there are no more marketable trees within a reasonable proximately to any mill. As it is the timber is a long way away.
