Prince George, B.C.- Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership will celebrate a special event later today to mark the start of the Prince George Pulpmill Odour Reduction Project.
The project is estimated to cost between $8 ad $10 million dollars and when complete is touted to reduce the current TRS ( total reduced sulphur) levels in half.

The odour reduction project will involve:
  • Installation of ducting and fans to collect vapours from existing brown stock and recovery area vents
  • Installation of a condenser to strip moisture from the vapour;
  • A re-heater to heat gases after moisture removal and before injection into the recovery boiler;
  • Incineration of the gas in the recovery boiler with a power boiler as a backup; and
  • A new building approximately 12.5 m x 16 m by 13 m high to house the fans, condenser and re-heater.

The project will be located and operate within the existing footprint of the Prince George Pulp Mill. The new building will be adjacent to the existing buildings.

The condenser will require 3020 litres of cooling water per minute that will be sourced from the Nechako River within the terms of an existing water license.

Condensate will be stripped of TRS and sent back into the process. The stripped TRS will be incinerated. The cooling water will be managed as part of the existing effluent system that discharges to the Fraser River within terms of an existing permit.

The project is expected to be complete by June of 2011.

The funding for the project comes from the Pulp and Paper Green Transformation funds offered through the Federal Government.

So why are the taxpayers funding this through a federal government grant?
What's wrong with this picture?
oh and they get lower tax from the city and i am sure the hst will benifit companies like this..and the government gives them more money...yeah and i thought we had huge debt not only in our provence but the country too....silly me
You realize that Canfor provides a lot of high paying jobs around here right? And those people pay taxes. If Canfor were to pick up and go elsewhere, it would be devastating for PG.

I am not a supporter of Canfor's pollution practices, but that's why it's been so slow to adapt to any kind of change and why there has been no pressure by government for them to clean up.
Remember that this federal grant was the only legal way for our government to offset the unbelievable "alternate fuel" rebate that the US government is giving thier mills. For those that dont know, the US mills started adding diesel to thier black liquor from the mill and burning it for power. The US government than allowed them access to huge grants as they are using an "alternative energy source".
With probably the highest cancer rate in BC MrPG,who cares about high paying jobs, lets just get them to clean up there act right?

Besides, how many times have you heard "if the pulp mills shut down, PG will be gone".

How many saw mills have just shut down(with good paying jobs)but I still see PG trudging right along.
I care very much about the high paying jobs. Those high paying jobs keep many in my family & friends with a roof over their heads. And all the secondary businesses in town also benefit from those jobs. There are many, many causes of cancer and there is no proof that any of it is caused by the mills. How many of you smoke? That's the number one cause of cancer!
Canfor is the big mill. As mythoughts said, they provide a lot of direct and indirect jobs in this town.

As far as the effect of the pollution, I have heard many people's stories and how their eyes and lungs burn on bad days. Some people are more affected than others. You can't tell me that the pollution has no effect on the health of people.
I don't care if I have to pay to have cleaner air. At least they are finally doing something about it.
so you whiners complain that government and industry don't do enough to improve air quality in the city, and when they do, you still complain. I hope this is the last improvement made and they spend the money elsewhere where it will be appreciated and you ignorant whiners all die of lung cancer.
Any odour reduction cannot come too soon and I am glad this is going ahead, whether or not it is fueled by taxpayers' dollars.
This is a good thing.
metalman.
gamblor,

about 70% of the posters on this site choose to whine and complain on pretty much any subject, its pretty much if they dont have something bad to say, they have nothing to say.

jonnypg,

maybe you might have noticed that the population in PG is shrinking. Think that might have something to do with closures?
Finally an additional expensive solution to the odour (pollution) emissions is going to be installed and people are complaining?

Instead of diluting it is actually about reducing.

I don't care where the money comes from. We all live on this planet together and breathe the same atmosphere. At the end of the day that is all that matters.

And yes, we do need the well-paying jobs.
PG pulp mills are not going to shut down and they are not going away.
Period.
There is no economic logic in that whatsoever, but we continue to hear that rant all the time.
Considering the length of time it has taken for them to clean up their act,it would seem the fear mongering has worked in their favour.
There is no question these high paying jobs benefit the entire community, but how long are we prepared to allow our tax dollars to be sucked up by major corporations who can and should be paying for it themselves as a matter of corporate responsibility?
Wow! there IS a lot of pulp mill workers on this site!

and don't forget if they didn't get any bailout money from the Government, there would be one less pulp mill in this city...
plus they would be going on there merry (stinking) way

Stompin Tom just stick to your other subject, your love for the HST..
I can't speak for everyone, but I can say that I'm not a mill worker. However, I do know that money talks and BS walks.
hammy,

glad to see you have allot to add to the subject, glad I could entertain you.

Just curious, is there anything you stand for? Pretty easy to whine and throw darts when you dont have any backbone.
