Regional District Searching for Solutions for Rural Schools
By 250 News
Prince George, B.C. – There may not be enough time to save the Dunster School for this fall, but the Regional District of Fraser Fort George has approved submitting an application to the School Community Connections Grant Program for funding to pursue a neighbourhood learning centre model for Dunster. “I don’t believe we have the time to keep the school open for this fall, but we may be able to do something for next year” says Director Kevin Dunphy.
The Dunster school is one of several schools within School District 57 which will be closed this fall because of funding shortages and a declining enrolment.
Salmon Valley is another school which is slated for closure. The School District has indicated a willingness to work with the Regional District to find options for maintaining school services in rural communities. Those options may include the lease or sale of a school property to the Regional
District.
Director Warren Wilson says his discussions with School District 57 have left him with the impression that there is no interest on behalf of the School District in providing classes at that facility even if the building is owned by the Regional District. Wilson says the numbers they’ve been crunching suggest that without the education portion, this project is not viable. Further discussions will be held with School District 57.
