Prince George, B.C.- Mr. P.G. is ready to welcome more tourists and if current numbers are any indication, there will be more visitors to greet this year than last. Year to date visitor numbers in Prince George are up 9.6% over the same period in 2009.
The visitor centre at the junction of Highway 97 and Highway 16 is open 10:00am to 6:00pm seven days a week. The downtown visitor centre on 1st Avenue is open 8:00am to 8:00pm seven days a week for the summer season.
In 2009 this location saw over 8,000 visitors, approximately 40% of the total traffic through Prince George visitor centres. The majority of travelers are from British Columbia (25%), Europe (22%) and the United States (11%). Last year 8,500 room nights were generated by tourists at Prince George visitor centres.
Both centres provide information on what to see and do in the Prince George area, as well as throughout Northern BC. Staff are Tourism BC and World Host trained and will be taking on new projects this year such as geo-caching to help enhance visitor experiences around the city. Staff are also promoting various attractions included in the Golden Raven Cultural Experiences around Prince George and throughout the northern region. This year Barkerville Historic Site and Fort St. James National Historic Site, each a two hour drive from Prince George and together attracting nearly 100,000 visitors per year, have been added to the core seven attractions under the Golden Raven Program.
This year marks nearly 40 years that visitor services have been located at the 16 and 97 junction, a location that has become a traditional meeting place.
