What a horrible tragedy. The highway was still closed at 8 pm last night. We had to drive a half hour down an extremely dusty road which in the end only took us a few km's past the accident scene. A long detour indeed. This accident wasn't far from the one that took 2 young girls lives a month ago. Be careful people! My heart goes out to these families, I'm so sorry for your losses.
I drive that road a lot,and I am always amazed at the idiots out there.
The road itself is dangerous, but so are far too many of the drivers.
Never been passed so many times on a double solid line in my life!
But travel a few miles out of town from either end,and you NEVER see a cop.
It is extremely rare.
So where is the good old RCMP?
Too busy in town now?
We used to see them all the time back
not so long ago!
Bring back Radar Ross who used to patrol.
Seems after he left, that was it.
It was like he used to live out there and we all cursed him,but it did make a difference in how people drove!
Small cars in an accident, not much different than being on a motorcycle.
I have noticed that even if I go 5-10kms over the speed limit on that road I am still being tailgated by idiots who ride on my rear bumper just itching to pass - it is scary. So one gets by and is replaced by another, this can go on for the entire 1.5 hour trip. I sometimes pull over when it is safe just to get them off my back. I am sorry for the loss of life yesterday.

I wish people would slow down.
I drove from the hoof to PG on Friday at around 5. The drivers on that road are out of control. We were steadily getting passed on solid lines, people were cutting in front of me at the last minute before narrowly avoiding a head on collision.

It's a shame that more people had to die due to anothers scary and terrible driving habits.
I second all the comments here regarding the crazy drivers on this road.
In the summer i drive this section weekly sometimes twice a week.
Fridays and Sundays are insane on this highway.
I came through yesterday and had to do the detour around the accident and i was stil getting tailgated passed on double solids and blind corners despite the fact that an accident happend. I was even doing 10km over the limit myself to keep up and this shit was still going on.
Almost witnessed a head on last week. The guy was doing aprox 40km over the limit coming out of the bednesti passing lane into oncoming traffic.

I find the best times with less stress to travell this route are anytime after 9pm or early in the morning.
If you have a two way radio monitor LAD 1 usually the truckers will boradcast where the maniacs are. LAD is also nice to monitor in the winter.

Lets look after each other out there folks.

Good advice northman. I add my voice to the comments above.
There are some long stretches toward Vanderhoof where there are not many opportunities to pass safely, so just relax, take your time, and wait for the passing lanes. You will be overtaken by those who cannot wait, all you can do is give them some room. Keep it safe, the tragedy of the two deaths on the week end is so avoidable. Very sad.
metalman.
It is a terrible highway with alot of traffic. Maybe we should all be typing to the Minister of Highways instead of on this site.
4 lane this hwy
Another tragic event for V'hoof.
Just a comment on the crazy drivers.... just as there are many that go too fast there's a few that could do the speed limit a bit more often too. And then of course there's the people that drive 85 kph until they hit the passing lanes then speed up to 120 just to slow back down at he first sign of a corner or double line! Everyone on the road should take more responsibility for what they contribute to the mayhem.
... and BTW if a merge sign meant stop it would be red with big white letters......
Exactly Censored, they are known as erratic drivers and are probably the biggest cause of problems out on the highway.
This crash occured in the same place the last one did that took the lives of those two young girls a few weeks back. This location is a bad one only because people get all backed up behind slower vehicles, then when the get to the start of this straight stretch where the visibility isn't good for passing, (although legal) they try to pass and get caught with someone coming at them. I have driven this road for years up to 6 trips a day 5 days a week and this partricular spot has always had the same issues.
There are only two things that will stop the carnage on this stretch.

1. People need to wait until it's safe to pass, or,
2. There needs to be a passing lane put in.

Blaming the road by saying it's a bad road doesn't cut it. The road just sits there minding it's own business until some impatient careless unskilled driver comes along and screws up. But its always easy to put the blame on the road isn't it?
I notice the Alaska license plates pass on corners, on hill crests, where ever they think they can squeeze it in.
