Garbage Rates Going Up

Prince George B.C.- You will be paying more for garbage pick up as of July 1st.

Prince George City Council has approved increasing the rates because of increased tipping fees at the Foothills Landfill which is operated by the Regional District.

While the Finance and Audit Committee recommended Council approve a 4.5% increase effective July 1st Councillors  Dave Wilbur and Brian Skakun opposed that. Councillor Skakun still would like to see some examination of a ten day cycle for collecting garbage, and says the Foothills Landfill should charge a modest fee for allowing people to dump their garbage there. Councillor Dave Wilbur says the 4.5% increase comes at a time when people are feeling the pinch, and is too much in one shot.

None the less, the rate increase has been approved.

The new 6 month rates are as follows for the three container sizes:
Small             $   67.50
Medium          $   88.50
Large             $ 108.00

Transfer station fees at Vanway and Quinn Street will increase to $6.00

City Hall expects the increase will encourage some to change the size of their garbage carts as was the case the last time the rate was boosted. The change in carts cost the City about $3.5  thousand dollars, although the amount of garbage arriving at the landfill was the same.

Manager Bill Gaal says that means people are either over stuffing smaller garbage cans, or making a visit to the Foothills landfill on their own.

When the hell is this town going to do curb side recycling...???? Any suggestions anyone out there...this is so backwards for me...
you can do your own curbside recycling for $10 month with either blue jewel or sunshine
Please do not inflict unwanted (for a fee) curbside recycling for me or my neighbours. The system has left us with little after tax money. Increase taxes like the HST, carbon tax, mores fines from the RCMP and garbage pick up again and city taxes. Give us a break. Recycling aside, isn't every one saving our earth with our "revenue neutral" carbon tax?
I dispose of my cardboard and newspapers with no problem. Refundable soft drink containers are a no brainer when it comes to recycling. I don't wanna pay more money out of my after taxed pocket to some well meaning , do gooder earth saviour. Thank you very much.
Know what I'm sayin'?
I've heard Big Bark recycling is really excellent from a couple of friends.
I'm almost to the point of throwing EVERY THING into my garbage container because I'm totally upset about this whole thing.
First we were gong to save all kinds of money with the new trucks and containers. Then there was the 150 thousand dollar building for 1 truck? Now another increase in rates. A lot of people lost a job because of this and our pick up rates steadily increase. This council has to pull back on spending. The only thing I want them to do is fix the roads, make the turds go away and BALANCE our books.

I've talked with a number people who have said 'enough' and are throwing every thing into the container. Maybe we should be sorting our garbage like Halifax does? That would employ some people.
"you can do your own curbside recycling for $10 month with either blue jewel or sunshine"

So a small City container costs $135/year for the City to pick up.

A private curbside recycler charges $120/year for picking up probably at the most the same amount of recycled volume as can be put into a small city container.

So, the City is $15 more than the private company. However, I suppose the private company can get some money back from a larger recycler. If it is $15, then their cost to drive by and pick up is the same as the City's.

Of course, that is not quite true, since the City has to pay a tipping fee.

At best then, the cost to pick up anything curbside is the same whether private or public. At worst, the City's system is less expensive for the work of picking up since they also have tipping fees to consider.

So, is the City overcharging? Does not look like it to me. Would a private operator do it more economically? I doubt it.

I have found that since we do not get a newspaper anymore that the amount of paper we have to recycle has gone down substantially. We recycle less because we use less.

Now there is a novel approach. :-)

We also find that we can use the same electrons over and over again. Now if they would not charge us for keeping those electrons excited, it would be really great.
From a more civilized part of the province:

Councillor Skakun proposes a longer cycle for pickup. Well, provide larger containers for the same price as the smaller ones, or provide recycling services with alternating kitchen waste and regular garbage pickup as provided in Port Coquitlam. Can't just cut back service. Reduce tipping fees by separating the compostable garbage.
Its June folks, the city workers probably just had a raise on there hourly wage!
So who runs the Regional District...the people that decided to raise the 'tipping fees' at the Foothills Landfill???

There are Directors on the Regional District....can anyone name them??? Are any of them on PG City Council??

If I'm paying for it, I'm using it & throwing EVERYTHING into the garbage can. I don't take anything to recycle and I'm sure as heck not paying another $120 a year for someone else to pick up the recycling. It all goes into the garbage now & I've saved myself $120 a year.
Gotta raise the rates so Danny boy has more money to buy property downtown. Look at the last deal where he put $500,000.00 of taxpayer money in someone else's pocket.
I find myself agreeing with a few of the thoughts on this thread.

I have been a good recycler for years now. I take paper, plastics (where I can), tin cans and cardboard milk cartons back to where appropriate on my own dime and time. But all I get in return from the City and RDFFG are more fees, even though my garbage can has 2/3 less in it.

With all these tax and fee increases, I think I should to start getting my money's worth. But I don't know if my conscience will let me.

Here's a thought. If we are regular recyclers on our own, without curbside pickup, how about some "tipping fee" credits towards next year's bill?
I agree with mythoughts. Everything's going into the garbage now! Hell were paying for it, it's All going into the garbage now. Save myself time and money in gas going to the landfill. You can stick your curbside recycling, just more taxes to add to the pile!
Like Pylot Project, I have also been recycling for years and pay a curbside recycler $120 a year to pick up my stuff. I think that I should be getting an annual credit from the City for the amount that I am not dumping into the landfill. I know that the City pays $55/tonne to dump into the landfill; now all I have to do is calculate how much my recylcing weighs for a year and that is how much of a credit that I would like to see on my annual bill to the city. One thing for sure I will remember the councellors who voted for the increase.
Councilor Munoz has sunk her teeth into the curbside recycling idea and that's it. Who cares if it will cost everybody more or if some people will have a hard time getting dinged yet again: It's coming, it's only a matter of time.

It also doesn't seem to matter that a lot of people are already conscientiously recycling on their own.

The City bill will be in the mail, guaranteed.
Two questions.

Does the person who suggested this new, efficient, cost-saving garbage system still have a job?

Can I give the City it's container back and manage my own garbage disposal?
Just because Munoz thinks it's coming, doesn't mean we will use. I care if it will cost more & I'm betting others do too. Next civic election she'll be gone.
I'm with mythoughts and hammmy on this one...I'm getting tired of taxes..just like when they said our property taxes were going to take a small increase..mine went up nearly 500.00 per year..that stinks!
Opt out of over priced garbage pick up? Where's my copy of the Charter of Rights where it says "freedom of association"? Or does the city of PG trump the C of Rs?
The garbage containers are property of the city. Why not charge them a storage fee for them?
