Police Service Dog "Ram", offers a right paw salute while  Deputy Commissioner Gary Bass and  Ram's handler, Constable Cameron Long  pose for the camera

Prince George, B.C.- There was no shortage of red serge at the coast inn of the North this morning as members of the RCMP were decorated for their many years of service, peace keeping, and given commendations and certificates of appreciation for their special efforts.

Despite all the attention to RCMP protocol, the uniforms, the salutes, the parade, the flags and the anthems, it was a four legged member who stole the show.

Police dog, “Ram” was so excited about he and his handler Constable Cameron Long receiving a Commanding Officer’s Certificate of Appreciation, that when it was their turn to receive their certificate, “Ram” stood on his hind legs and put his front paws on the chest of Deputy Commissioner Gary Bass. While that kind of move could have been career limiting for others in the force, Ram got away with it, and was able to settle down enough for a picture where he gently raised his right paw.

In all, there were 26 officers recognized for their service. The ceremony this morning saw one RCMP member, Corporal Denis LeBlanc, receive a Canadian Peace Keeping Service Medal for his 10 months stationed in the Ivory Coast.

C.O’s Commendation:

Constable Scott Cundy:

Arrived on the scene of a crash of a small car and a semi tractor trailer truck in Burnaby, the driver of the car was trapped, and while unable to free the driver, Constable Cundy braved severe heat and toxic fumes to slow the spread of the fire. The driver was eventually freed by other emergency personnel and while he suffered burns to 30% of his body, he would have perished had it not been for the efforts of Constable Cundy.

Constable Russell Mante:

He and Constabble Jeffrey Ferguson had attended a call to a home in 100 Mile House. There they found a suicidal woman who had taken pills and was drinking. She was losing consciousness, and while an ambulance had been called, the officers decided to transport the woman in the police vehicle. While taking her to hospital, she lost consciousness and stopped breathing. The officers pulled over, and Mante applied CPR and chest compressions until the ambulance arrived on scene. The woman recovered.

My brother was a dog handler in the RCMP many years ago.. Amazing animals. While the main dog depot is in Innisfail, Alberta, we've got a super police dog trainer here in PG. Great to see this dog honoured. It's also great to see the 'human' awards too. Despite all the bad press recently about a few rotten apples in the bunch, it's always great to know that you can have one of these Mounties respond when you really need them.
