New Phone Scam Using Telus's Name

Prince George, B.C. - There’s a new phone scam in the region. Telus advises that over the past 24 hours, it has received a significant number of customer calls about a new phone scam.

Customers all report picking up a phone call from a 905-395-XXXX number to hear a recorded message: “Hello, because you are a valued TELUS customer you will receive 3,000 travel dollars. To accept press 1.”

Any customers who press 1 are connected to a person who miss-represents themselves as working for TELUS and tries to extract personal information from them, likely for identity theft.

These calls are a scam, and are not coming from TELUS.

TELUS advises that anyone who receives such a call should hang up. If you have already received a call and given personal information, please contact your local police or call TELUS’ fraud team at 1-877-567-2062.

It appears the scammers are using an auto-dialer from outside of TELUS’ network, and only using TELUS’ name because it is a widely-known brand.

TELUS Security is investigating, and has engaged police.

And yet if you call TELUS or the RCMP about any calls like this one, they will tell you that there is nothing they can do. The police will tell you to call TELUS. TELUS claims the CRTC won't let them shut these people down. The CRTC says that there are rules in place and that telemarketers must follow them.

So the CRTC looks upon data miners who use fraud to get at the data as telemarketers?

CRTC should be closed down. Its too communist in its rules.

I have a shaw phone # and i received this call ..... it told me because i was a valued telus customer ... I laughed because i took telus to court and won for fruadelent practices in terms of their so called contracts

If you get a call from any of these guys tell them you'll call them right back...if you get a human first try with out a hell uv a long wait......you know something is up!
