Prince George, B.C.-  Tomorrow is Elder Abuse Awareness Day and the P.G. Council of Seniors is inviting the community to an open house to learn more about the issue.

Elder Abuse and neglect cross all geographical, socio-economic, religious, racial and gender lines. The World Health Organization estimates that globally, one in every four older adults is a victim of elder abuse, neglect or exploitation.

In B.C, it is estimated that one in every 12 seniors is experiencing some form of abuse but the estimate may be too low as researchers suggest that for every reported case of elder abuse, another five   are not reported.

Members of the community are invited to visit the P.G. Council of Seniors Centre at 1055 5th Avenue from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. During that time there will be some information presentations as well as interactive discussion.

We should not even have such a term as 'elder abuse' in our vocabulary. Our elders should be among the most highly respected members of the community.
Those who would take advantage of a senior or any other disadvantaged person are despicable, vile creatures.
metalman.
Amen to that,metalman!
I could not agree more!
By the way...ever since I retired,my wife makes me take a shower everyday, brush my teeth, and change my clothes...including my underwear!
She also said that seeing as how I was not on the job anymore, she would find things for me to do around the house!
Does that count as abuse?
;-(
Yes! that is a different category though, Andy, it is called spousal abuse.
metalman.
haha..you guys are too funny...spousal abuse?? hahaha.
On the topic of elder abuse however, I see it at times with my job and it is despicable Metalman. I think people who abuse our elders or like you said, anyone at a disadvantage should be jailed for an indefinate amount of time. They should remember that they too will be an elders one day.
