Who Says We Can’t Criticize the State of Israel?

Like a postage stamp that has been licked too often, a word can lose its power and authority if it is used indiscriminately.

So it is with the word “terrorist” that is now routinely applied by governments all over the world to demonize and marginalize political opposition. And likewise with the word “anti-semitic” which is a label stuck on just about anyone who is not in total support of the state of Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians.

Indeed, Jimmy Carter, former President of the United States, was given precisely that label after calling Israel an “apartheid state”.

Even South African Judge Richard Goldstone, himself Jewish, who led a UN authorized fact-finding mission into Israel’s invasion of Gaza last year has been called anti-semitic for his findings which have been labeled as “anti-Israel” by the Israeli government.

Closer to home, the aid organization Kairos had its funding cut off by the Harper government because of, the government alleges, its support for the boycott movement against Israel and its “anti-semitism”. Kairos is a joint venture of thirteen Canadian churches and church organizations, including Catholic, Anglican, Christian Reformed, Evangelical Lutheran, Mennonite, Presbyterian, Society of Friends, and United Church.

The latest public figure to get the “anti-semitic” label is NDP MP for East Vancouver, Libby Davies. She has had this pinned on her because she expressed support for the international campaign to boycott and sanction Israel for its blockade of Gaza, as well as suggesting that Israel has been “occupying” the land since 1948.

Prime Minister Harper has since called for Davies to resign as deputy NDP leader and Liberal Bob Rae has accused her of “hostility and ignorance”. Even some members of her own party, the NDP, have attacked her, with Thomas Mulcair NDP MP calling her comments “egregious” and out of step with her party.

It is quite interesting that, while the caucuses of the Conservatives, Liberals and NDP are very quick to jump on Davies, they have made no criticism of the killings by Israeli commandoes of the nine people on the ships attempting to break the blockade of Gaza by Israel.

It is also quite interesting that, as a 2007 BBC poll shows (see footnote 1), 52% of Canadians have a negative view towards Israel, while only 23% had a positive one. The question should be asked: Just who is out of step with who? Is it Libby Davies or is it the three federal parties in parliament who are out of step with the Canadian people?

Indeed, it is these same three federal political parties that have formed “The Canadian Parliamentary Committee to Combat Anti-semitism”, the members of which are claiming that criticizing Israel is a “new form” of anti-semitism. Dylan Penner, founding member of Independent Jewish Voices, believes that the ultimate objective of this Parliamentary Committee is “to introduce legislation that would make it a crime to criticize Israel”.

All of this raises serious questions about freedom of speech and right to conscience in Canada. Parliamentarians and Canadians themselves should have the right to criticize the policies and practices of any of the 190+ countries in the world as they see fit, and that includes Israel. If criticism of Israel is “off limits” and “illegal”, how soon before it become a crime to criticize the Canadian government itself?

In an interview, Libby Davies has also said that there are other federal MPs who do not approve of Israeli actions, such as the blockade of Gaza and the invasion of Lebanon, but who “are actually afraid to speak out.” According to her, this constitutes a new type of “McCarthyism” in Canada.

Why are they afraid to speak out? A number of analysts have commented about the strength of the Israel lobby in the U.S. and that members of Congress are afraid to criticize Israel for fear of being targeted by this well-financed lobby. Is that the case in Canada? More than a few believe that is also true (see footnote 2).

So what are the implications for politics in Canada if MPs are afraid to speak out because they fear reprisal from the lobbyists and supporters of a foreign government? For one thing, perhaps such MPs should not be in Parliament. If they are intimidated by these lobbyists, how can they be expected to stand up for their own constituents?

Secondly, rather than having a parliamentary committee examining and dissecting the beliefs of ordinary Canadians, maybe its time would be better spent looking at the power of lobbyists in Ottawa who lobby on behalf of foreign governments and who seek to make criticism of these governments off limits or even illegal.

Now that is a postage stamp that might just stick.

I see the special status Israel has in world politics as one of the byproducts of the holocaust.

The way I see it, that special status will not likely be changed during the lifetime of those alive on this earth today.

It seems to be popular to criticize Israel nowadays but let me ask you a question.
Suicide bombers target school buses, crowded markets or anywhere they can kill a Jewish citizen.
During a two year cease fire agreement Gaza/Palestine lobbed over 6,200 rockets into Israel targeting anyone including women and children.
So what is your level of tolerance?
When would you get Pissed Off?
After the first rocket, the tenth rocket, the thousandth rocket, the five thousandth?
When you have a government dedicated to wiping Israel off the map and no chance for peace expect it to keep going on.

I am not inclined to take sides in this matter as often more prudent not to.

The above website though gives a lot of information since not everything is as cut and dried as it looks at first glance.

RIP seems to have forgotten how Israel came to be. Never mind how they now act like the Nazies they so feared and despised in the second war.
Obviously the world cannot undo the creation of Israel, but that said, why is it so hard for people and governments (primarily in the Western world) to admit that the creation of Israel royally screwed up and changed life for current and future generations of people that were living in that area prior to its establishment?

Are there not parallels to our own First Nations, where governments are just starting to accept the fact that they made errors in the past that need to be corrected? Is it not incredibly ironic for our governments to take a "proactive" stance in regards to our First Nations issues, yet have a completely opposite stance on a similar issue half way around the world?

I agree with gus in that I'm not sure this will be solved in our lifetime. Too much at stake and too much pain that has yet to heal on both sides.
There is no fear of being attacked by Israelie "lobbyists" for speaking out. There is however an attack on common sense for who is the bad guy in this conflict. Terming the summer conflict of several years ago with Lebananon as an invasion is a case in point. Its as if big bad Israel woke up one day and decided things were just to quite and decided to tour into Lebanon for some excitement. The fact that Hezbolla rebels kidnapped Israeli soldiers and fired countless rockets into civillian cities had nothing to do with it. As for the latest conflict of the ships running the Gaza blockade without inspection.....hello. What sane country would allow your enemies to potentially smuggle arms into Gaza without a close inspection? Its not lobbyists that keep anti-Israeli crackpots on their toes...its common sense in knowing who the bad guys are. Libby Davies and many on this site have lost sight of that.
In a way it amazes me that people will fight so hard to be able to be ruled by the tyrant of their own ethnicity. Look at life for average arabs in many of the other arab states. not so great. For the average south african only the colour of the tyrant changed. in some respects palestinians are better off with israeli government because it is a functioning democracy. what they are really after is a palestinian state. how well would that really work? i agree with the way the palestinians feel. imagine if someone declared Surrey BC as the new Sikh homeland because after all, a lot of Sikh's already live there. and the only consolation you got if you lived there is you could be a citizen in this new state if you wanted to be. none of us would be too thrilled with that and we'd probably do exactly what the palestinian's are doing.

but imagine if that sikh state actually got their act together and treated everyone equally and provided more cost efficient government, better health care, better civil rights, etc. would moving into langley and firing rockets at them really be such a good idea.

just random ramblings

Like Princegeorge I try not to take sides in this conflict. The reality of the siuation is that Israel is not going to go away and neither is either of the Paletines. The only way that the conflict will end is when all sides get together and work out compromises that satisfy them all, but that is not on the cards, for a long time I expect.

Nothing is gained by artificially specifying a date to measure actions from - the Lebanon event for instance - as all events in this conflict are rooted in previous events. Even the Gaza blockade is rooted in the democratic election of Hamas as the rightful government and its overthrow by States who did not approve.

Israel came into existence after the second world war, at least partly as a consequence of the guilt many western nations felt over the systematic genocide of jews. Current events are based on events at that time, and not to evaluate the current situation from that perspective since is to have a distorted view of the events.

Israel's creation was rooted in religious beliefs that the particular piece of land was given to jews by god. Unfortunately, many influential evangelical Christian groups believe Israel is now fulfilling prophecies about the end times leading to the apocalypse, so they promote its restoration. This is the gorilla in the room, but one that is almost always ignored as somehow unseemly to mention.

The world's states should use their influence to bring about voluntary compromises and agreements between Israel and the two Palestines. They should not, as they continuously do, promote the interests of one of the states over the others.
North Americans think that home front terrorism was invented September 11, 2001. Ask the Isrealis about that. They battle these lunatics every day. And we critisize them for defending themselves. If terrorists threatened our homes and our families would we act any different. I know I wouldnt. I would attack first and ask questions later. Because if you wait till they kill you then you can never win.

That being said open dialogue should be okay. We openly critisize the Americans without this type of media storm. Why not the Isrealis?
The definition of a terrorist is very simple in my mind. A terrorist is on the wrong side when you are on the right side.

Being on the wrong side depends on the period in history. Is it possible for someone or some group to be, by the same group, labelled terrorist(s) at one time and looked up to as a full member of society at another time?

Of course! There are many examples. Let's try the Boston Tea Party and the events that followed.

But more importantly, let's try Menachem Begin and the Irgun. The state of Israel was led by people who were just a decade or two before considered to be terrorists by the British.

This one is an easy read.
http://terrorism.about.com/od/groupsleader1/p/MenachemBegin.htm

This one is a bit more difficult to read from my point of view, but it gives one an insight of the force of the Zionists, those who wanted and Israeli state because, while God drove them out as their story goes, they felt that it is time to return.

http://www.monabaker.com/quotes.htm

Shamir, 1997: "The settlement of the Land of Israel is the essence of Zionism. Without settlement, we will not fulfill Zionism. It's that simple."

Shamir 1988: "(The Palestinians) would be crushed like grasshoppers ... heads smashed against the boulders and walls."

Sharon, 2001: "Israel may have the right to put others on trial, but certainly no one has the right to put the Jewish people and the State of Israel on trial."

And that is where we find ourselves ..... one can only put down a people for so long, then they will rise when injustices have been done. It can be seen the world over. The Israeli situation is one of the extreme ones which has affected the entire western world and will continue to do so for a long, long time to come.

The only thing we can hope for is that it will stay at a low rumble and does not erupt like a volcano one of these days.
This is an issue full of hypocrisy. Pretty much everyone with an interest in it is a hypocrite at some level. Save for very few patriots of the 'rule-of-law' and the western ideal of 'universalism' as preached by Jesus... most are hypocrites trying to redefine history and even the actual meaning of language to extend their hypocrisy either through ignorance (the vast majority), but more sinisterly through deliberate cold blooded and cruel calculating actions for the enabling of a hidden agenda so evil they couldn't possibly speak of it in real terms.

Israel is said to be the home of the 'Jewish people'... the only democracy in the Middle East. Far from it.

Israel was created through violence against the Palestinian people decades before Palestinians ever fought back... people forget that the Nakba was as hideous in its operations as even the holocaust. The terrorist Stern Gang and the Irgun movement (later became Mossad and counts as its founder the father of the current Chief of staff to Barack Obama Mr. Emanual) used violence to seize as much land for the 11% of the population that was Jewish. They ethnically cleansed whole villages (over 500 in one year) and districts displacing people that for over 60-years now through multiple generations have remained refugees recognized by no other countries. Israel holds the world record for the most refugees deported (over 4 million). They bull dozed whole Palestinian towns for Jewish settlements... where they couldn`t scare the Palestinians away with terror they poisoned their water wells and uprooted their trees. Israel has the world record for UN condemnation (500+ times in its 60-year history). Per capita they have killed more civilians than any other country other than Cambodia.

Israel is a nation that has no internationally recognized borders... no formal constitution (to protect the rights of citizens). Israel has what is called the basic laws and they are for Jews only and even Israeli Christians have no rights under Israeli basic law.

Palestine is a people with no recognized nation today with their lands occupied, they have no power over their daily lives, and live in constant fear of unaccountable violence from Israel... they are strangled and starved economically as well as physically through blockade of things as basic as paper, vitamin C, and jam. The Palestinians have no rights and are not even recognized as humans by Israeli authorities in power. The first intifada didn`t begin until 1987 when all hope was lost and Palistinians rightfully decided to fight back against an institutionalized genocide of their nation through settler outposts on all the high ground, bull dozed homes and farms, and the ever growing confinement of their people from the basic necessities of survival... they had no safety anywhere even for their political leaders that are assassinated at will by the Israeli`s... whether in Palestine or foreign countries alike (Israel is the only country on Earth with legalized assassination teams for political purposes).

Clearly Israel is not a democracy when the Palestinians live in the condition that they do. Clearly a democracy would not call itself the `Jewish state` and limit rights to one tribal people at the expense of all others. Our `leaders` here in Canada, like Harper, are fond of attacking anyone that points this out as an avocation of `wiping Israel off the face of the Earth`... what they refuse to comprehend is that for Palestinians to have rights as human beings the notion of a state that recognizes only the rights of Jews must end... clearly Christians and Palestinians should have the same universal rights as all others under the law, and if that means restructuring and renaming the country, than it is what needs to be done for the good of all involved including the Jewish people.

Politicians like Harper are part of the problem because they enable and protect crimes against universalism in the name of tribal loyalties... they advocate a two state solution so as to perpetuate the conflict and avoid recognizing the rights of the native inhabitants to the land... descendants of the biblical Hebrew (the Palistinians have a closer gene pool to Jesus, then the modern day European Jews of Israel... its scientific fact).

Zionism is not about building a homeland for the Jewish people. Rather zionism is about creating insecurity for the Jewish people so as to Stockholm syndrome them into obedience for globalist banksters. Every policy a zionist makes has this end goal and even the likes of Harper, Obama, Blair, ect ect act either as ignorant patsies or fully self aware sadists in ensuring zionist policy achieves this objective... the objective of perceived anti-semitism that creates a perceived vulnerability and victimhood of the Jewish people... who will then rely on zionism for financial, military, and diplomatic support to carry out the zionist agenda. Real zionism is atheistic in nature and worships wealth and power at the geopolitical level.

The roots of zionism can be traced to the funding of the Rothschilds and the Kazars of Southern Russia (a mixture of Turkish and Mongol blood that used violence to project power as in the raids on Europe by Attila the Hun in his attempt to extinguish Christdom). A kingdom that was built on usury that was outlawed everywhere else in the world at the time, and a kingdom that specialized in debasing human dignity. A Yiddish people that knew no limits to their caputz.

Mossad motto is ‘By way of deception, thou shalt do war’.

The Rothchilds vision of a New World Order is zionism... zionism is the Rothchilds NWO. The Rothshilds own and control nearly everything. The NWO is not so much about having the military power, or power of production in society, or even the control of political actors... these are merely the spoils of war. The NWO is about the control of 'exchange', the control of currency, stock markets, insurance, taxation, 'markets', or any other medium of exchange. Through the power of exchange they can control the world. The Rothchilds are the Bank of England... they are the US Federal Reserve... in fact they control most all of the worlds currencies, stock markets, energy markets... you name it if it involves exchange (ie carbon credit trading). Controlling the 'exchange' of the world is inherent in the art of fraud, slight of hand, and deception. This 'risk' requires control... control of regulators, control of the judiciary, control of politicians through control of political parties and systems that are controlled by political parties, and control of geopolitics in general.

The banksters like their ganster namesakes all require a hideout where they can evade the law. That is what Israel is... a hide out for all the corrupt war criminals (from Russian oligarchs, to Wall Street financiers)... economic destroying financial operators that are operating in countries throughout the world. This is why Israel has the 'exeptionalism' to international law where they are above the law, and it is why no politician in power will challenge that.

In 1896 Theodor Herzl published the book called 'The Jewish State' where he outlined the creation of modern day Israel. A book funded by the Rothschild financial empire that declared anti-semitism is Israels best friend.

“It is essential that the sufferings of Jews... become worse... this will assist in realization of our plans... I have an excellent idea... I shall induce anti-Semites to liquidate Jewish wealth... The anti-Semites will assist us thereby in that they will strengthen the persecution and oppression of Jews. The anti-Semites shall be our best friends”. (From Theodor Herzl Diary, Part I, pp. 16)

It is therefor understandable why zionism supported policies in places like Canada to turn away Jews in WW2. For them declaring war on Germany in 1936 and the liquidation of as many orthodox Jews as possible was a good thing, because they then took control over the Jewish identity and could force this new captive (in the mind) population to their new home in Israel where their terrorist networks (Rothschilds funded) were setting the ground work for a future state. A future state where the Holocaust would be the new religion for the people to fear the outsider, and to lend loyalty to the zionist project. A future state with no defined borders (unlike any other country in the world), and no constitution... where laws can be changed quickly and unpredictably making every citizen in danger of becoming guilty of yesterdays crimes, thereby engendering loyalty to the state above all else. A 'we' people, rather than an "I' people. A collective that sees its future tied to the policies of global zionism.

To hide this agenda during WW2 the British brought in what was called Regulation 18B. Brought in the first day Churchill took power... a bill that allowed for the imprisonment without trial of anyone arrested under this regulation, and used to silence any voices that might cause an alert to the fraud being perpetrated on the world. No one was spared including MP's and Admirals in the navy where the Home Secretary was the sole judge of a persons loyalty above and beyond the scope of the courts. People just disappeared and often were never heard of again for years before their families would find out what happened to them. A critical time in global zionism that required special measures to keep certain things quiet.

Fast forward to today and you have Harper calling for the removal of Libby Davis for voicing an opinion on the matter of zionist crimes... as well as giving credibility to an Israeli show trial process to white wash their latest international crime on the high seas. Isolating Canada geo-politically against the world in the process of arguing Israeli exceptionalism to international law.

Israel, a country with the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world, now has the ability to blackmail all the capitals of the world... they threaten a NATO ally Turkey with turning Ankara into glass (Israeli foreign secretary only last week said this)... they threaten Iran with the same thing. We have a country in Israel that attacks a NATO ally humanitarian ship that was inspected by our NATO ally prior to its setting sail for Gaza and endorsed by our NATO ally in its mission... attacked violently in international waters premptively in the night so camera's couldn't film the incident, then confiscated all independent film after using machine guns to gun down unarmed civilians... basically an act of war committed against the second largest military power in NATO... and the Stephen Harper government demands opposition politicians in Canada be removed for voicing an opinion contrary to the zionist agenda.

Israel make no mistake is going to war again... this time it will be against the entire Middle East region and I have no doubt they will employ their nuclear weapons in this war. A war that will have horrific implications for the entire world and current Canadian foreign policy not only encourages this, but wishes to play any role it can to enable it. That is the significance of where we are today.

In my view, if Israel can assassinate a sitting US president, and take down the twin towers in downtown New York, then they are diabolical enough to do just about anything their twisted minds can conjure up if they think their game theory calculations will see them come out ahead.

I think the Chinese will take over Israel and all will be taken care of.
The Palestinians are Semites too, are they not? Libby Davies and Helen Thomas should be celebrated for expressing a contrary opinion...

John Stewart Mill said it best:
"If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind."

I suppose Harper and his ilk need a remedial lesson in deMOCKracy.
Yes as far as the Semites go, Arabs are Semites as well. The Semites are joined by the same language origin. Hebrew and Arabic have the same language origin. There are also black semites from Ethiopia.

In addition, not all Jewish people are of the same race since Judaism is a religion which anyone can take on and people do and some of those have migrated to Israel once it was formed.

As far as I am concerned, if one is anti anything the proper "anti" terminology should be "anti-Zionism".
I can agree with that Gus... but you will never convince a zionist of that because they make their currency convincing people that opposition to their plans is motivated by racism, rather than opposition to a political ideology. Their whole existence as a movement is based on double speak, which is part of the reason why most people in the world don't truly understand what zionism stands for, thereby giving zionism the cover they require to carry out their agenda. I blame the MSM for not being more clear as to what is going on, and thereby perpetuating the ignorance and apathy of people that don't have time to do their own research. Everyone loses as a result whether they be Christian, Arab, Jewish, independents, universalists, and everything in between.

Censorship and controlling definitions is the most powerful tool that globalist zionism has in carrying its agenda forward.
