Prince George, B.C.- The Downtown Community Garden is not the only one of its kind in Prince George.
Tucked in behind Exploration Place in Prince George is another garden which will be educational as well as (hopefully) bountiful.
“It’s part of our plan for the greening of the museum” says Tracy Calagheros the Executive Director of Exploration Place.
“This is the first year for what we call the Explorers Urban Garden, it was started because the after school and pre-school programs require out door activity” adds Calagheros.
The children will be taking part in the tending of the garden, and as part of the program, will have some discussion about the different social agencies in Prince George. “When it’s time to harvest, the children will take part in canning the produce for Christmas gifts, and will decide where any excess produce will go.”
The garden isn’t ready for an official opening yet, as some historical pieces are going to be worked into the surroundings, for instance, it is possible an old gas pump may become a new sprinkler.

The height of these planters would likely make great planters for anyone who has trouble bending down to weed, prune, thin, etc. a normal vegetable garden.
Oh what a good idea!!! Actually teaching children to can...We have taught our daughters to can and make homemade jams. I believe it is an art that is disappearing. So many parents are too busy now to pass this on to their children. It is not only yummy and healthy, but it may also get them through some hard times in the future...
