Vanderhoof ,B.C.- The Greer Creek fire continues to burn southwest of Vanderhoof and the evacuation alert for residents south of Nulki Lake remains in effect.

There are 101 firefighters working on this blaze and equipment includes 8 helicopters and  36 pieces of heavy equipment. Crews will continue to build a fuel-free guard line today .

Structural protection units are in the area to assess the 38 homes in the evacuation alert area.

The Regional District of Bulkley Nechako says it is prepared “We are organized and ready to go no matter what happens”  says Debora Jones-Middleton.

Should the evacuation alert be upgraded to an evacuation order, residents in the affected area are expected to muster at the municipal offices on Connaught Street in Vanderhoof. From there, arrangements would be made for those needing accommodation.
The Ministry of Agriculture has already held discussions with ranchers in the area on how to protect livestock, and the Provincial Emergency Program has been in steady contact with the Regional District should PEP’s assistance be required.

It's the legacy of the pine beetle coming back to haunt.
I have been saying all along that if a fire ever breaks out it will be a fire like none other. It is very very dry in the forest and there are still tens of millions of dead pine killed trees standing. It was never a matter of IF but WHEN it would happen. Let us all say a prayer.
Pray for free bus rides until the fire is out?
You're right IMO!
It had to come!
And it won't be the last one either!
I have flown over the area and it is dead, red timber as far as you can see!
A ticking time bomb!
But! Mr. Bell says the fire is mostly in a logged-off area!??
Well then, that must be the truth.
Pray with one hand and crap in the other and see what gets filled first.
I spent some time down around OOtsa lake hunting last fall. Looking at the trees on the ground from beetle kill, I thought of the game called 'pick-up-sticks'. My hunting partner said "this place needs a fire". I think he is right. Those trees are piled criss-cross 12 feet deep.
