Prince George, B.C. - Prince George-Mackenzie MLA and Minister of Forests and Range, Pat Bell is on the list of MLAs the Fight HST campaign plans to target for recall action.
The Fight HST petition is closing in on the 700,000 signature mark having met or exceeded their targets of 15% of the voters signatures in all 85 ridings. The campaign is now looking at its next step which would be recall campaigns to bring about a change in government.
Fight HST Leader, Bill Vander Zalm, says he expects the petition to hit the 700,000 signature mark by the time he delivers it to Elections BC on June 30th. “We have drafted a list of all of the MLAs who we will target for Recalls come November,” said Vander Zalm.
Vander Zalm says the 24 Liberal MLAs targeted for Recalls were chosen for the huge number of signatures collected in their ridings. He says all of the MLAs on the new “HST Hit List” received 25% or more signatures on the petition in their ridings, making them prime candidates for Recalls, as follows:
1. John Slater – Boundary-Similkameen
2. Pat Pimm – Peace River North
3. Donna Barnette – Cariboo Chilcotin
4. George Abbott – Shuswap
5.Terry Lake – Kamloops North
6. Bill Bennett – Kootenay East
7. Ida Chong – Oak Bay – Gordon Head
8. Ron Cantelon – Parksville – Qualicum
9. Bill Barisoff – Penticton
10. Murray Coell – Saanich North
11. Gordon Hogg – Surrey-Whiterock
12. Barry Penner – Chilliwack – Hope
13. Norm Letnik – Kelowna-Lake Country
14. Ben Stewart – Kelowna- Westside
15. Steve Thomson – Kelowna – Mission
16. Eric Foster – Vernon-Monashee
17. Kash Heed – Vancouver- Fraserview
18. Kevin Kruger – Kamloops South
19. Richard Lee – Burnaby North
20. John Les – Chilliwack
21. Don McRae – Comox Valley
22. John Rustad – Nechako Lakes
23. Mary Pollack – Langley
24. Pat Bell – Prince George – Mackenzie
“We haven’t yet decided which ones will be Recalled first, or how many. Our sense is that we will Recall one or two at a time, so as not to bring down the government, but to pressure them to repeal the HST.”
Vander Zalm says his Fight HST organization has already secured a web site, and has started researching all of the ins and outs of Recalls. He says there are a number of advantages to the Recall legislation over the Initiative Petition,“First of all, Recall is binding, and is determined by the Chief Electoral Officer after validating a successful Recall Petition. The government has no say in the matter. Secondly, there are no limits on how many times a Recall may be conducted in the same riding. This gives us the ability to immediately repeat the process if needed until the MLA is removed from office. It’s going to be very exciting.”
