Campfires to Be Smaller

Prince George, B.C.-  When it comes to campfires, size matters.

As of July 1st, the new, legal  size of a campfire in the province is  one half  a meter by one half a meter.  That is half the size allowed before.

The new regulations are  a measure to reduce the risk of human caused wildfires.

"As we head into peak camping season, I want to remind people that more than 850 fires resulted from careless human behaviour in 2009. That number must come down," says Forests and Range Minister Pat Bell. "We want people to enjoy the great outdoors, but not at the cost of public safety."

The new rules also require campers to build a fireguard around their fires by scraping down to the dirt and clearing away potentially flammable debris, such as twigs, leaves and needles. A shovel or at least eight litres of water must be stored nearby to extinguish the fire.

Provincial staff will begin educating campers about the new regulations during the Canada Day long weekend, giving people an opportunity to learn about the changes.

As summer progresses, failure to comply with the new rules will result in a $345 fine. An additional $345 fine will be levied for campfires lit during a ban.

Now we have to watch out for the campfire cops. What next.............
I'm just bringing a cigarette lighter.
Soon we will be living in a communist state..
Campfire cops...cool...I guess they will be paid for at the expense of schools.
I think the law has some merit...I son't have to tr and sleep next to some dork who has a fire big enough to heat down to from thirty miles away...
"As we head into peak camping season, I want to remind people that more than 850 fires resulted from careless human behaviour in 2009"

Okay just what does that mean? Come on Bell break it down. How many campfires where involved? What other causes?
wonder if there is a limit to the size of back yard fires?
Ya gotta love it. Just exactly what do they mean by a **half a meter by a half a meter** Is this width and height, or is it a half meter from the middle to the edge, on both sides , so in effect, it would be one meter in diameter. If height is involved how will they measure it.

Who is responsible for the fire. The person who lit it, the person who is watching it, or the childern that are throwing wood on it.

We need to light this fire under Bells Bottom to get him to move on to things that are more of an issue.

If we had the number of forest rangers, and forestry personel that we need in the bush, we could eliminate a lot of these problems. Passing rules and regulations, backed up with fines, makes it look like you are doing something, but who will police the situation.

They aren't saying there Palopu, that way they can fine you and get away with it...
I think what they mean is no more than 1/2 meter in diameter and 1/2 meter high...just enought to cook over but not so big as to cook out the neighbors.
I guess Campbell forgot to tell him how to write this up...lol
If you go to the old website, they measured from one side of the fire to the other and the height of the materials being burned. I will assume that they will do the same with the new measurements. Then again, who knows with these folks. I'm looking forward to the guy with the tape measure poking around in my fire!

Once again, more rules and regulations created due to the stupidity of a few. Outlawing stupid would be easier!

C'mon now sheeple! Bell has to earn his mega thousands in salary and humungous pension by coming up with something he can be proud about. Maybe this will be his legacy?!
Any of you posters get out in the woods?
It's plain common sense.
The size is perfect for cooking on or roasting marshmallows. If you have any common sense at all, its normal for people to go out in the bush and carry shovel and water, or a bucket to haul water to the campfire.
That's what responsible campers do. If you want to go out and booze it up and build a huge bonfire, you may end up with a ticket, but probably spend more than that on booze.
Stupid people do stupid things, that's why the jails are full.
We end up with more rules for the bush based on 10% of the population being idiots. Wait'll the person who causes the fire gets billed for fighting it, then the ticket just serves as a reminder that he/she was stupid.
Slim,
of course it makes sense...
I get a kick out of it coming from Bell....not sure he has had an independent thought since he left Wendy's...lol
If , and I repeat "IF" people used their sense we wouldn't need fire police...
and if someone gets caught starting a fire, or it is their negligent fault, they should pay for the costs....if the government has left them a job...

Palopu you don't know what a **half a meter by a half a meter** is; and who is responsible for the fire

STAY AT HOME AND DO ALL OF US A FAVOR
Half a meter is 50 centimeters or about 19.69 inches.
About knee height for an 1.7 meter (5'10) adult.

The Liberal federal government of Pierre Trudeau first began implementing metrication in Canada in 1970

So why is it a problem to talk in metric after 40 years. Even if most of the commentators on this site were born in the 1960, they would have been schooled in metric.

Get with the program. Metric is based on the wavelength of light, ergo scientific. The imperial system is based on the size of body parts of the king, Henry I believe.

The regulation says half a meter across, that is diameter, by half a meter high. That converts to 50 cm diameter or height. This is what a camp fire should be. Not the raging wasteful bonfire that urban sheeple often build. One should be warm on the side facing the fire, and need a blanket or coat to keep the back warm. If this is too uncomfortable to deal with, maybe camping is not your bag and you should stay in the city.
Well if they write me a ticket, Ill just throw it in the campfire.

I was born in 1960 though and there wasnt much on metric system.
But you learn.
Now is that inside the fire ring or outside? Is area calculated if not a perfect circle? What if I say this is a bonfire? Are bonfires banned? Oh this is getting so complicated. Guess I will have to bone up on my geometry.
So instead of having a 4 pallet fire I now have to cut the pallet into 4?
The government should just make a template with the allowed sizes on it and Smokey the Bear could just drop it over your fire to see if it is legal.
Bill. Obviously you dont know when a person is making fun of a situation. Any fool with half a brain and a butt knows what half a meter is. Insofar as who's responsible for the fire, that is probably a valid question. If your out on the boat and your kid loads it up, I suggest that you would be responsible.

If you get a fine and dont pay it guess what??? When you go to renew your car insurance, they wont give it to you, until you pay what you owe the Government. No getting around this one.

Once again responsible people will be subject to oversight by Government hacks because of their inability to enforce the laws that are on the books. Whats wrong with enforcing **Drunk and disorderly in a public place*** **Indecent exposure** **Impaired Driving** **Driving without due care and attention*** etc; etc;. These are just a few laws they could enforce to keep these yahoo's out of the bush and the parks, but of course they wont. Instead they will bring in new useless laws, and harass law abiding citizens and fine them.

The reason some people still continue to use the old system is because our biggest trading partner the USA never went metric. Its about time we woke up and smelled the roses. Havent you ever noticed that all Railway Cars are not in metric. Also havent you noticed that all major sporting events in the USA including Golf is not in metric.

You have never been told the full story on the BS Metric system. The USA doesnt use it, and Japan our second biggest trading partner has a dual system. At the end of the day who cares.

A rose is but a rose by any other name.
The Romans use to say, 'corruptissima re publica plurimae leges' translates as, "In the most corrupt state are the most laws."
Funny when Pat Bell turned a blind eye to the 360 Networks $24 Billion dollar fraud that the BCSC was responsible for regulating... Bell claimed he was elected to deregulate and not to regulate... I guess camp fires are more important than the integrity of our markets in Pat Bells world?
The change in size from 1 meter to 1/2 a meter does not change the size of the fire by 1/2 but changes the size of the fire to 1/4 the original size. A old rule, double the diameter and the area increases 4 times. Do the math, .7854 x D squared is the area.
All this is is taxation through fines!
