Prince George, BC.- Although there is still one day for George Street property owners to register their objections to the removal of the canopies   from George Street,   the decision would seem to be a done deal.
An alternate approval process was launched on May 28th in order to set the stage for the termination of a bylaw which established the canopies in the first place.
Prince George City Council plans to approve a bylaw at it’s next meeting that will allow for the removal of the canopies. That is of course, unless before 5:00 tomorrow, 50% of the property owners on George Street (between 3rd and 6th Avenue) representing at least 50% of the assessed value of the parcels along that section, state they want the canopies to remain in place.  That is not likely to happen.
So, the demolition of the canopies, which have been in place since 1973, could start after August 1st of this year.

So tell me is taking them down going to stop the drug sales. This is what this is all about isn't. Same with closing the PG Holtel as well.
Weren't those canopies put in place because of one of the many attempts to "improve" the downtown core?
does anyone have any idea of what the cost is for these numerous studies and the following implementations, which seem to only lead to another study?
You are right willowynde

There were studies to
1. decide whether to put canopies up on 3rd avenue
2. then there was the decision to do the same with George Street; may not have been a major study.
3. then there was probably a study to change the traffic pattern on third to one way
4. then there were several studies of how to "beautify" third when the canopies did not do the trick
5. then there was a study to change the traffic pattern on third to two ways.

Back and foth. Back and forth.

The studies don't cost as much as implementing them.

In the final analysis, none of the changes really made a difference. It did, however, make some people feel they accomplished something. THAT is what we spent our money on.

I think people who do studies and people who support their implementation should be held more accountable.

If they succeed, great!!!! Give them all the accolades they deserve.

If they don`t, then learn from the mistakes and figure out a way to make sure that they do not continue to make changes as if they were moving furniture around in their living room.
If only one could add up all the costs for the studies, revitalizations, all the money costing ideas that had to be done and then the next voted in bunch decided to tear down and replace to put their own little signatures on down town P.G. Probably coulda bought a brand new down town....leveled the old down town and had it installed...brand new....in working order. Hey...its Monday morn.
The canopies were never meant to last for as long as they've been standing. They are basically falling apart; its probably the safest bet just to tear them down. That said, I wouldn't be opposed to new canopies.
Maybe our city council can instigate a study to see of we have too many studies in this 'burg.
...to see why we have... Oops!
"I wouldn't be opposed to new canopies."

Neither would I. To be blunt about it:

1. the canopies were "el cheapo" in the first place ... mainly they let no light in ... private canopies are typically glass these day.

2. they were never maintained or re-furbished, such as Spruceland just did.

3. they served the primary purpose of keeping the elements from pedestrians which was thought to be (and may have been true) one of the key reasons people did not shop downtown.
Of course, if we had canopies like the one in the picture they would look out of place other than near more substantial buildings such as on third towards Victorai

I think the city should buy them and store them for historical value. Maybe we can reuse them one day. just like the cameron street bridge truss. Lets keep spending, city counsel can just raise taxes later on this year to help pay for all these great ideas.
if u_r_serious then you should propose to re-use the sections at those bus stop locations where there are no shelters yet.

That way we could bring the history of downtown to a neighbourhood near every citizen of the community. Just imagine the pride.
So there goes the shelters for the homeless.
Unlike in Vancouver, I have yet to see anyone sleeping on the sidewalks in Prince George.
That is because it is COLD here and there are shelters here as well. The main reason they don't is because it's just too damn ugly downtown!
tear them down and MOVE ON................
Now THAT is original thinking. Move forward. Move on. It's water under the bridge.

So tell me, what are we going to move on to?

What's the next big idea?

How long will it take to be shelved?

Will make-do projects never cease?

Are we doomed to repeating the same mistakes over and over again?
