Prince George, BC- The City of Prince George has a long way to go before its Downtown District Energy system becomes a reality, however, it has received an award for it just the same.
Each year, the Canadian District Energy Association selects a community that displays “visionary leadership” in encouraging community sustainability through district energy. Past winners include Halifax, Calgary, Vancouver, and North Vancouver. This year, the community is P.G.
“This award recognizes the fact that it is not easy for communities to implement change and that it takes municipal leaders with significant vision to be able to take a path less traveled,” said Richard Damecour, Vice Chair, Canadian District Energy Association Board.
The City has taken some steps towards development of a wood fibre-based downtown district energy system using the process already in place at the Lakeland Mills site on River Road.
The proposed downtown district energy system is subject to successful completion of a federal environmental assessment process and alternate approval process.
