Prince George, B.C. - Alex C. Michalos, a former UNBC Chancellor and professor emeritus, has been named a Member of the Order of Canada for his significant contributions to education throughout his career.

Dr. Michalos is an international pioneer in the study of quality of life and happiness and brought this expertise to Prince George, where he conducted many surveys of local quality of life issues that led to enhanced local service provision.

 

Michalos has published 24 books, over 100 refereed articles, and founded or co-founded seven scholarly journals. Among the seven, he is Editor in Chief for the Journal of Business Ethics, the most frequently cited journal in the world devoted to business ethics, and Social Indicators Research, the first scholarly journal devoted to quality of life research.

In announcing the Order of Canada for Dr. Michalos, the Governor-General’s office identified “his contributions to the social sciences, notably in research that has helped to measure quality-of-life in Canada and abroad.”

Dr. Michalos was Chancellor of UNBC from 2007-10. He lived in Prince George for nearly 15 years before moving to Brandon, where his wife, Deborah Poff, is the President of Brandon University. He is only the third person from Prince George to be named to the Order of Canada. The other two are former UNBC President Charles Jago (2005) and conservationist Tommy Tomkins (1974).
