Prince George, B.C.- Two years after receiving initial funding for an “active transportation plan” the draft plan is ready.

This plan will  incorporate biking, walking cycling, transit  and any other means of getting around that  does not involve traditional vehicles.

Public consultation produced two  recurring themes or “more” and “better”:
·         More options, bike lanes, sidewalks and trails,
·         More road and snow maintenance,
·         Better road etiquette.

The plan has proposed some new trails , sidewalks and bike lanes to have better connections throughout the city. What the plan does not  present is  any estimate of the costs involved.

Mayor Dan Rogers says he often hears complaints about maintenance of trails , clearing of  bikelanes, and  he advised that City Staff will be wasting their time if they have any thoughts of developing any sort of trails tghrough CN rights of way. "I have been wondering why we keep banging our heads against the wall, it is time to move on to plan B."

The next step on the draft plan will see more public consultation and the hope is to have the plan finalized this September.

wait for the negative comments coming...

"if you want to ride bikes, move to vancouver"

"prince george is not a bike city"

"fix our roads!"

"who gives a sh@t about people who ride bikes?!"

"i'll care about bicyclists when they start obeying rules of the road"

and so on, and so on...
So I guess painting lines on the Hart Highway will be out of the question. You'd think that you'd show some road courtesy to all those American tourists headed to Alaska. Tsk, Tsk
I always use my hands and the rules of the road while cycling.
I NEVER cycle.. I have a car and I'm not crazy.
Anyone drives a gas car of any sort must feel guilty if not they are an idiot. BP oil spill and tar sands says it all/ Greed for oil and gas yuck.
Why would anyone feel guilty about driving a gas car? I sure don't. I drive a full size truck and love it.
Thats classy PG make sure we choke up more oil and gas. Canada the land of oil and gas hogs. The rest of the world thinks we should be ashamed of ourselves and you people think you need a pat on the back. Figures coming from small minds out there.
Care to make a trip out to the bush and drag some logs in with your bicycle Chris? Because thats where the tax dollars come from that pave the roads for you to bicycle on...
what ever
Shaw cable doing some work on St Lawrence and as a result building some nice new replacement sidewalks. You would think this would be a great opportunity for the city to replace the beatup, broken up curbs but no.
Another study. They never seem to stop studying. Keeps the people at City Hall employed.

They dont even know what a bike lane is. They think if they paint a cycle on the shoulder it becomes a bike lane. Wonder why all those cars are parked in the same bike lane?
Cheers

The city is replacing the sidewalk on St. Lawrence, not Shaw. If Shaw is working there, they are more than likely installing their lines while the sidewalk is out. This saves them from having to do it in the future at their expense. Telus does this as well. From what I see, the curb that has been left in place, seems to be serving it's purpose. It may not be new, but with the current price of concrete, I'd rather see the $$$ go into replacing bad sidewalks. It's not ALL bad.
