Fort Nelson- RCMP are investigating a motor vehicle collision between a truck and an ATV, which have resulted in critical injuries for two Fort Nelson teens. The accident occurred at 4.30 last Saturday.

A seventeen year old male was driving a quad southbound on 50th Avenue South, in Fort Nelson, with a seventeen year old female passenger. A number of witnesses indicate the quad was travelling at high speed, as it passed them on the road.

The ATV then appears to have attempted to negotiate the curve/corner in the roadway, which leads to a stop sign with the intersection with Hwy #97. A flat deck truck was stopped at the stop sign, at the intersection, waiting to enter onto the highway.

The ATV collided with the Flat deck in what appears to have been very close to a perpendicular impact. The ATV proceeded under the flat deck, making contact and sliding along the undercarriage, before coming to rest.

Neither occupants on the ATV were wearing helmets. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision.

The 17 year-old male is in critical condition with head trauma, fractured pelvis and internal bleeding. He was flown out to Edmonton for further medical treatment and he remains in critical condition.

The 17 year-old female is in serious condition with a badly fractured arm, fractured pelvis and some internal bleeding. She has also been medivaced from Fort Nelson for further medical treatment.

Nothing to investigate reading this Report, Quads and Trail bikes don't belong on any Road.
Unless they are trying to figure out what to charge the people on quad with... and since they were drunk, treat them like adults.
Condolances to the parents.
Outwest is right.

1. low pressure tires of ATVs do not respond well on paved roads versus dirt roads or fields. The turning action would not have resulted in the expected action.

2. That quad is not designed to carry a passenger and should have had only one person on it.

3. Even if the ATV was allowed on the road, and some communities may, the driver would have had to have insurance as well as a drivers license.

4. Both people would have had to have helmets.

Plus any other conditions specific to this situation such as DUI, excessive speed, driving with undue care and attention, etc. etc.

This is a display of utter stupidity and we get that every now and then. Most do not end up in incidents such as this. Enforcement is not as tough as it should be in my opinion to reduce and totally prevent such incidents
You know what Darwin said.
Gus - just curious what you mean by enforcement is not as tough as it should be? These kids had to be breaking what, a dozen laws so more regulation obviously wouldnt help. If the police had seen them I am sure they would have tried to stop them - so what more could be done for enforcement?
I frequently see people riding ATV's on the sides of roads, which is in a right of way that is part of the road. They are not supposed to do that unless they have a special permit. I doubt any of them have that since they are mostly for people with acreage who are farmers or ranchers. Occassionally they are not wearing helmets and other times they are riding two to a quad.

I have not only seen but also stopped people who are riding snowmobiles in parks as well as roads in PG - in the bowl. Reported to the police, they gave a warning. Reported to City Hall. The person answering at Bylaws did not even know that it was or whether it was illegal in PG. They said `call the RCMP`.

I suppose it is one of those things that has to be primarily complaint driven. However, I think there are very few complaints.
Complaints? Hah! It's only against the law if you get caught driving an ATV on city streets. Along the same lines as getting caught running a grow-op. Only if you get caught. Our law(s) is/are a joke. They're based on yer perception. By the way, crime does pay. Doncha know?
Take a drive down Domano, the quad 500.

Bylaw suservices, anyone know what they do? I called them about a odvious violation which all they had to is drive by and see. Easy right, wrong. They would not get off their collective butts unless I gave them my name which I would not do. I suspect when you see a bylaw truck going down the road, they are only making a timmies run.
Gus - I agree with you 110%. Everything you said is dead on - but unfortunately i dont think giving people fines for driving on the road allowance is going to stop this type of person who races down city streets drunk with no helmet... At some point we can only regulate so far and then we just have to leave it up to luck that the shallow end of the gene pool only injures themselves.
Interceptor ... you are right. It is impossible to enforce stupidity out of people.
