Prince George, B.C.- The canopies on George Street are going down.

Although there was an alternate approval process in effect, which required at least 50% of the property owners representing at least 50% of the assessed value of properties on George Street to register opposition to stop the planned demolition of the canopies, no such opposition came forward.

Two tenders are planned to be issued for this project, the first being the removal of canopies and associated works, and the second being the installation of street lights.

The estimated time to complete the removal of canopies, the restoration of signs, and fascia repairs is two weeks, commencing as soon as practical from the date of award of the tender. The tender for street lights will be issued as soon as practical, following completion of technical specification. The estimated time to complete the street light installation is two months.

Given the additional time that may be required to obtain the ornamental street lights from the supplier, the installation of street lights may need to be completed in the spring of 2011. George Street businesses will have the opportunity to provide input on the style and colour of ornamental street lights that are installed.

Why do these things have to be done in sequence?

Technical specs could have been ready, as well as the consultation with George Street businesses and the resulting tender documents.

Had that work been done, those documents could have been issued today, tenders received by the end of July, awarded mid August, underground work and footing work started in September to disrupt the remaining merchants as little as possbile and everyting ready for the lamp posts once they arrived. Those could have been installed in the winter.

But ... wait ... I always forget this is the City's work ... :-0
