Prince George, B.C. – Members of the CEP will be meeting soon with the new owners of the Nelson News and the Prince Rupert Daily News which are among the papers recently purchased by Black Press and are now slated to close.
The closure of four papers in total will mean about 40 people will lose their jobs.
Glacier Media, which owns the Prince George Citizen sold ten of it’s B.C. papers to Black Press, the owners of the Prince George Free Press, just last week.
The CEP says the union office and Local 2000 members were informed of the decision yesterday. “This is a very sad day for journalism in B.C., as well as for the people who will be losing their jobs,” said Mike Bocking, Local 2000 president. “We will be meeting with the company soon to get more details about their plans.”
Black Press bought the Trail Daily Times, Grand Forks Gazette, Creston Valley Advance, Fernie Free Press, Nelson Daily News, Prince Rupert Daily News, and Cariboo Advisor group which includes the Cariboo Advisor, Quesnel Advisor, 100 Mile House Advisor and Coast Mountain News.
But Black Press will close Nelson Daily News, Prince Rupert Daily News, Quesnel Advisor and 100 Mile House Advisor, as it already has competing publications in those communities.
The union says it has been advised the Nelson Daily News and the Prince Rupert Daily News, both of which have been published for over 100 years, are closing within 60 days.
