Prince George, B.C.- A 27 year old man  is in custody and faces  charges of attempted abduction, assault and  obstruction of justice  in connection with the attempted abduction of a 4 month old baby.

RCMP say  around 2 this afternoon,  they  were called to  the corner of 8th Avenue and  Victoria Street where they  were advised a male, high on drugs, had tried to kidnap a baby.

The male had reportedly approached a young couple from behind as they were walking with their 4 month old baby girl who was in her stroller. The male pushed between the couple and tried to grab the baby as he was mumbling that the baby was in danger.

The suspect assaulted the mother and father as they tried to fight the suspect off .
Witnesses advised that once the baby was safe with her parents, the male suspect ripped the cover off the baby stroller and was charging at oncoming traffic in the area.

Members located the suspect, who was eventually handcuffed and taken into custody.

The 27 yr old male will be facing charges of Attempt Abduction, Assault (x2) and Obstruct a Police Officer as he attempted to give a false name at the time of his arrest.

I was driving by went it went down and could not believe my eyes. The guy was on something and I am glad the woman and baby got away.
Thats just weird.
Thank heavens the baby's safe. Nothing like a parent defending their child, that's awesome.
He may have been high on drugs, may have a serious mental disorder, we just don't know at this point. The thing is, he tried to give a false name to police, that speaks of some coherence.
Unfortunately druggies know no bounds, anything can happen. There is no excuse, this person has chosen a fools path if it was drugs and will probably have a lawyer explain to the judge that this was totally out of character and he should be allowed bail. Hopefully though, the reason he tried to give police a false name is to cover warrants outstanding. We can always hope.............
Oh my god, how horrifying!!! A parents worst nightmare.
Is this GUY who ever he is , from Prince George ?? or is one of our new arrivals ??
Kidnapping? Isn't that when you steal a kid and hold it for a ransom? What's in a word? Sounds kinds more melodramatic than saying , "Doper tries to abscond with baby". The word abscond probably would send many to their dictionaries, most likely.
Why can't we feel safe walking down the street in the middle of the afternoon? Or at anytime for that matter? Somehow, we have to get these drugs off our streets. People deserve to feel safe...
A snub-nosed 38 may help in situations such as this when operated by a trained individual. You are protecting something more valuable than all the worlds riches. Banks hire people, who are armed, to move there money around, black market business's use arms to protect their sales areas , product movements , and is a great aid in the area of accounts receivable. The tool mentioned above is one that can enhance the feeling of safety........think of it as urban PPE.
I agree with slim2229. WHile the .38 may be a might excessive I totally emphasize with whelen's point of view. Material goods are one thing, but an infant is another. Many may think that cops are bullys, heartless, etc but the one thing that strikes to the very being is the prospect that an innocent baby or child has been victimized. Cops are mothers and fathers also and the same emotions run strong and deep as they did in the baby's parents. The piece of work is very very lucky a mob didn't get to him before the police did.
It is obvious the man needs counseling. Any volunteers? I thought not.
It's a sad thing. Even though everything turned out ok yesterday, this family's life has probably changed for the worse for a long time. I don't know anyone who wouldn't have been tramatized by this. I hope this family will be able to go out and feel comfortable again soon. They'll always be turning around to see who's behind them. Hopefully, the child will not be raised with the constant fear of this happening again.
I wish them well.
"Kidnapping? Isn't that when you steal a kid and hold it for a ransom?"

No. In our criminal code, which you can buy in paperback or read on-line, holding a person for ransom is kidnapping, but kidnapping does not require holding for ransom. It is also kidnapping if you confine a person for the purpose of enslaving him or removing him from Canada. There are distinct offences under the heading of "abduction" having to do with interfering with child custody (e.g. a parent who takes a child away from another parent). There is also a separate offence of kidnapping diplomats.
I must add that the kidnapping section of the Criminal Code is very badly written and not easy to parse.
Harbinger, I'd be quite happy to have a chance to chat with him. Not sure if counceling is my stong point though.
"It is obvious the man needs counseling. Any volunteers?"

-5 minutes alone with the family would do wonders. If he makes it out alive.
The sad part is,the guy is obviously whacko and there is nowhere to put him...other than jail.
And there will be no help in jail.
Thus, the pattern will repeat itself when they turn him loose.
Glad the parents and baby are all safe!
Far too many of these kinds of people in the downtown area in general!
We have a lot of whacko people being sent to Prince George we have the services, M.C. is planning a center that will house two floor clinic type services , and six stories of supportive housing. We should be asking how much of this type of housing do we need?? I bet M.C. will not be retiring in Prince George. I bet he has the spot picked out. I am glad the baby is OK.
If you build it- - -they will come.
