Man Dies Following Police Arrest

Prophet River - On July 13, 2010 shortly after 4:00 PM a member of the Fort Nelson RCMP Detachment arrived in Prophet River to investigate a reported assault.
During the course of that investigation, he located a 51-year-old man inside a residence who had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The police officer escorted the man out of the residence.
 
While exiting the area of the house, the man, who was not handcuffed at the time, fell down a short staircase from a patio landing. The police officer observed injuries to the man’s head and arm and immediately requested medical assistance.
 
While awaiting for the Paramedics to arrive from Fort Nelson , one hour away, the police officer commenced first aid with the assistance of two bystanders. These individuals are believed to have witnessed the man’s fall.
 
 
The man was transported to Fort Nelson General Hospital where he was provided with emergency medical treatment. The man’s condition deteriorated and he was transported to the University Hospital in Edmonton where he died .
 
As per National RCMP Policy, all serious injury or deaths involving the police will be investigated by an independent investigation team. A team from the Lethbridge Regional Police Service have been appointed to conduct this investigation. They are currently preparing to travel to Fort Nelson to initiate their investigation.
 
Prophet River has a population of approximately 130 people and is located about 1 hour south of Fort Nelson on the Alaska highway.
