The first  grouping of participants in the 2nd Annual Nechako River Float

Prince George, B.C. -  The flotilla is a small one on the Nechako River right now, but the fleet is expected to be on its way...

Just a handful of people on inflatable air mattresses and rafts have started rounding a bend in the river and coming into view, for those watching the river from the Foothills Bridge.

A call to the Prince George RCMP detachment says there have been no problems of note yet, as the 2nd Annual Nechako River float gets underway.

Given today's anticipated beautiful weather, police had issued a warning to participants to take proper safety precautions while out on the river, and a reminder officers would be ensuring there was no alcohol being consumed in public places.

Participants put into the river at Wilkins Park in the Miworth area and many float down to the boat launch at Cottonwood Park.

But it appears a number may pull out at the Foothills bridge.  A few dozen vehicles are parked on both sides of Foothills Boulevard at the north end of the bridge.

A number of spectators are on-hand, taking pictures and watching the river rafters as they float by.

ahh good times.
lets hope that the rcmp and the do-gooders don't ruin the fun for everyone!!
I can't help noticing the lack of lifejackets. That shows a huge amount of irresponsibility, and very little thought for thier own safety. It would sure ruin a beautiful day on the river if not everyone gets home safe.
Sorry Sparky the police don't spoil it for anyone...they spoil it for themselves...
Yes I don't see life jackets either....but if someone drowns it will be the fault of the police no doubt!
Eagleone posted this on the Friday free for all:

"The river is our biggest strategic asset for quality of life in the summer months... so why not provide access to the public so that we don't have to resort to the spectacle we see every day in the BUSH TOWN TYPE ACCESS WE HAVE FOR OUR RIVERS? Any other city would have a park with public access to the river and lots of parking."

I could not agree more!!!!!

We went along the river this afternoon to look at the park at the water treatment plant on the south side of the Cameron St. Bridge where a fewe people were coming ashore. That is a nice little park with a small parking lot but, with the new bridge and two way traffic that is TOTALLY UNSAFE to access from the on/off ramp since there is little to no visibility for oncoming traffic.

Then there was n ot enough parking at the boat launch on River Rd. so that there wer tons of vehicles parked on the roadway.

Finally, the really bad part. The access to the east of the Railway and Forestry Museum looks like the "bush town" river access that eagleone describes. That area is the most picturesque, in my mind, has tons of side channels that are relatively safe with shallow depth and low velocity water flow and lots of cobblestone "beach" opportunities.

I would think that it is a landscape architect's dream to bring that entire area up to a more urban waterfront type park. It is the best opportunity we have.

But, you know, it will take several more decades before there might be enough people in this community that recognize it and are prepared to do anything about it.
Ya, lets spend millions of taxpayers dollars on river attractions before the streets and other infrastructure thats falling apart in this town gets fixed. Absolutely brilliant!
Hey, do you have trouble doing more than one thing at a time Dragonmaster. You must work for the city. They have the same problem. :-)
What construction company do you work for or own Gus? Or do you work for the city, (sponges)? You sure spend a lot of time here on 250 spending taxpayers money for us. None of your business who I work for Gus! But seeing how yer so curious, I work for my family and I, not your kind. Your priorities are completely wrong Gus old pal. What is it with people like you that seem to think the taxpayers money is what makes the world go round? Most taxpayers are sick and tired of your kind wasting their money Gus. Hey Gus... tax us up the shoot, we love it!
lifejackets?! please if thats the only comment you can make you obviously never have come out of your house and read things like these all day to satisfy your life. There are plenty of other things you can imagine go wrong and a example would be the start of july and i think you prob know what im mean seeing how your not busy to do anything else
Someone stole our friend's boat. If you know of someone who acquired a "new" boat, let me know. It was 12 foot aluminum car top boat with yellow oars held together with duct tape. It was an older boat with family ties.
In 2006, my friend, my dog and I nearly drowned on the Nechako River while we were doing our annual float. One rule I had is never to consume alcohol while floating. Our group had floated many times without incident. We weren't wearing life jackets. It happened so fast. It was by the grace of God that we didn't die that day. I will never float down any river on an air mattress ever again. If I do go on the river, I would go in a boat WITH a life jacket. I have huge respect for the power and intensity of water and its unpredictable nature. Please be careful on the river folks!
