Looking west from Foothills Bridge late this afternoon

Prince George, B.C. -  For the most part, the 2nd Annual Nechako River Float has gone swimmingly...

Participants hopped on air mattresses, into inflatable rafts and lounge chairs, and various other inflatable paraphernalia at Wilkins Park, in Miworth, to spend a leisurely afternoon floating down the river.

By late afternoon, approximately 100-200 teens and young adults had put into shore near the Foothills Bridge, while several hundred more carried on down to the boat launch in Cottonwood Park.

RCMP are reporting no major incidents at this point in time, but say they'll remain vigilant through the evening.

While most of the crowd gathered on the shoreline and along the bridge was just soaking up the sun, there were a few who could be seen to drinking alcohol.

Two officers arrived on-scene to chat with groups on both sides of the bridge.  As Opinion250 was leaving, one young man was taken to the cruiser in handcuffs.

RCMP Sergeant Jason Keays says there have been a number of intoxicated individuals arrested over the course of the afternoon and several tickets issued.  But, he says there have been no major problems or injuries, and he's crediting heavy enforcement.

Keays says police officers received excellent assistance from B.C. Parks, Conservation Officers, and Search & Rescue in boats out on the water.  In addition, he says, B.C. Ambulance and Prince George Fire/Rescue were on standby.

In fact, he says, the event has served as an excellent training session, should a major incident arise on the City's waterways.

"It's a good exercise for all of the different agencies to work together, we got to see where our strengths and weaknesses are in terms of communication," says Sergeant Keays.  "(For example), we have to make sure we can all talk to each other -- more and more we're relying on cellphones and less on radios."

The pictures below show the scene further down the river...with the boat launch in Cottonwood Island Park serving as the end mark on the float route.

"In addition, he says, B.C. Ambulance and Prince George Fire/Rescue were on standby".

They were on "standby". What would they have been doing otherwise...fishing, sleeping, partying? Hopefully they didn't get paid extra for being on standby.

Gus... did they get paid extra?

"(For example), we have to make sure we can all talk to each other -- more and more we're relying on cellphones and less on radios."

Interesting...

I would think that 2 way radios would be more reliable, or effective, since everyone with a radio could hear/contribute to the communication, where cellphones are generally one cell phone communicating with just one other cellphone at a time?
They were drinking alcohol? Is that all our police have to do is hassel pepole that would like a cold beer on a sunny afternoon sitting on a river bank saoking up the sun. Get real.
Cheers
Retired I agree. The RCMP be busting the drug dealers balls!
I doubt these people were being smart about how they were consuming they're alcohol. If they had it in cups and were not acting like intoxicated idiots, they probably could of got away with having a cold beer or whatever, while sitting by the river. If they had they're boxes of beer visible and were holding a can of bud when the cop approached, guess what dummy your pouring your beer out and probably losing the rest of the case of beer.By what has been reported on this site, other than a fire happy jackass,it is a pretty slow weekend,so the cops went to the biggest event they knew of to keep things under control.
I agree with retired. It is time that whatever public drinking laws we have get burried 6 feet or however many millimeters under.

We used to have:
1. separate entrances for opposite sexes into the same drinking rooms

2. no windows into those drinking rooms

3. no drinking in diner type restaurants

4. to wait several months of operations for any restaurant to get liquor licenses

5. no drinking on outside restaurant patios

6. no drinking without eating meals in a restaurant

7. no purchasing alchol in other than government liquor stores.

And I am sure I am missing a few more.

Laws made by the idiots in our society who thought the rest of us were idiots. And we were, because we actually accepted it.

Then, we have to remember that people in Quebec have actually been allowed to buy liquor in grocery stores for the past 4+ decades. Bunch of sinners!
