Prince George, B.C.- It was April of last year that then Attorney General, Wally Oppal, announced that one of the courtrooms at the Prince George Law Courts Building was to be made into a high security court room.
The $2.5 million dollar construction to make that happen, is expected to start before the end of August.
Ministry of the Attorney General staff  tell Opinion 250 that since the announcement, there has been a great deal of planning and consultation done in preparation for  construction.
·        Consultation with local stakeholders
·        Preliminary scope definition
·        Hiring of a consultant team to lead the design and construction
·        Site visit by the consultant team to initiate planning based on preliminary scope
·        Development of design principles for key elements of the project
·        Detailed design development
·        Ongoing cost estimating to manage budget through various stages of design development
·        Research and acquisition of security equipment
·        Prequalification of contractors for specialized project components (e.g. security)
After all that, the project is expected to go to tender within the next couple of weeks.

There has been no official word on which courtroom has been selected for the upgrade, but it has been generally believed it would be Courtroom 104, the largest courtroom in the building.

Construction is expected to be complete by December of this year.

In addition to the $2.5 million dollar upgrade, the province was to spend a further $58 thousand dollars for a new secure interview/hearing room and install an additional videoconference unit at Prince George Regional Correctional Centre.

All this and no plans to actually keep the crooks locked up where they belong?
How much of that 2.5 million goes to consultants?
this is a waist of tax dollars and an insult to peoples intelligence who read this. there should be a standard plan prepared and the need to re-invent the wheel in each new location is a joke!!
Fix the roads
Thank you Norm. They act like this is the first high security courtroom in the province. Common sense is just not used anymore by government. $2.5 Million? Beyond comprehension. They are just modifying an existing room in the court house, aren't they?
