Williams Lake, B.C.- The Cariboo Region continues to be plagued with fires, with lightning strikes throughout the region sparking thirteen new fires over the last 24 hours.
The majority of the 120 fires throughout the fire centre’s boundaries have remained small; however large fires started by last week’s lightning storm have resulted in Evacuation Orders and Alerts. Firefighters will continue to suppress these blazes on a priority basis.
Fires of note within the region include:
- The fires in Meldrum Creek exhibited aggressive fire behaviour last night, and now cover an area of approximately 7,500 hectares. There are 200 firefighters on site, working with 25 pieces of heavy machinery and ten helicopters.
- The fires in the Alexis Creek area did not grow significantly yesterday. The largest fire in the area remains at 7,300 hectares. Fire crews, heavy equipment and aircraft are on site, along with structural protection units, which have been set up on homes within the area.
- The fire in the Dog Creek region remains at approximately 6,200 hectares.
- About 56 kilometres west of Quesnel, in the Pelican Lake area, there are multiple fires burning; the combined size of these fires is 7,500 hectares.
All Evacuation Orders and Alerts for residents in these areas remain in place.
